Stephen Deutsch Obituary

Stephen Neal Deutsch, 51, of Edmond, OK, passed away on November 24, 2009 after a brief illness. He was born in Washington, D.C. on September 25, 1958, attended State University of New York, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois in December, 1982, where he was a member of Pi Sigma Alpha and the National Political Science Honor Society. He earned his Juris Doctorate from Oklahoma City University School of Law in May, 1986, where he was selected to be a member of the Moot Court Board due to his outstanding advocacy and writing skills. He sought justice for the citizens of Oklahoma County tirelessly for 25 years, as an Assistant District Attorney in Oklahoma County, serving under three District Attorneys. I did not know Steve Deutsch, but I sat next to him for countless hours as my sons played Judo with his boy Michael. I was not aware of Steve's job or his accomplishments, but I know one thing about him for certain. He loved that boy. Steve loved that child with his whole heart and was exceedingly proud of him. As he watched Michael working hard his heart was full of joy. I pray that Michael will remember those times with his father all his life and will continue to feel the deep and abiding love his father had for him, always.

Liz, Rachel and Michael, I knew your husband/dad for many years, even before you kids were born. You were the pride of his life. He was a ferocious prosecutor and a wonderful man with the driest sense of humor I've ever known. I love him for his professionalism and his love of and knowledge of the law. He will always be a winner in my book and Oklahoma County loses a lot because he's not here. Live your dreams!

Rachel,
I'm not sure if you remember me or not, but I was your P.E. teacher (Ms. Wiewel) at Villa Teresa. I am so sorry for your loss. I remember how excited you would get when your dad would come pick you up from school. Please know that I am praying for your family.

Dear Liz, Rachel and Michael,

We are so sorry for your great loss. You and your family are deeply in our thoughts and prayers. A law enforcement hero has been lost at such an early age. May GOD bring swift understanding and peace to you.

One of the God sent joys of my life and that of my family is having the honor of being a part of the early life of Frada and the boys. Frada and I were like brother and sister and the boys my nephews, but most of all loving friends. We love you Steve and will miss you. Frada, Liz and children, Larry, Davenie and son; my wife Eula and our children remain a part of your family and will continue to love and support you with our prayers and respect. You just call out my name and I'll come running.

Still so hard to believe. He was definitely one of a kind. An ethical and incredibly strong opponent. A prosecutor that really believed in what he was doing for the State of Oklahoma, but never took things personally. There were so many others who had so much more to learn from him.

I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Deutsch this fall when I served as a jury member on one of his cases. I am sad to hear about his passing and will pray for his wife and children.

We had the unique pleasure of knowing Steve as a Public Defender and as a fellow ADA. He had a great sense of who the real bad guys were and who they weren't. Steve wanted to send the real bad guys to prison for a very long time and with the others we would "talk". He was a bull dog with a great sense of humor. It will be his laugh and his dry wit that we will miss but his greatest legacy will be that he was a man of his word.

May God Bless

Steve was a great prosecutor, but most importantly, he was a man after God's heart. Unembarrassed about his faith, he "walked the walk" and our community was a better place for having known him. I am honored to have had him as my friend.

Our family got to know Steve when he prosecuted our daughter's murderer. Not only did he do a great job, but he became a good friend in the 18 years since the trial. God bless you my friend, and your family.

My first encounter with Steve was a couple of weeks after I was hired as a Public Defender. He dragged me off to some Section 8 housing on the east side of OKC to interview a key State's eyewitness in a murder case for almost 2 hours. After we left, he kept asking me if she was telling the truth. I told him 'I don't know, she has a plate in her head.' For weeks, up until the trial, he would call me and ask me if his key witness was going to remember. That encounter set the stage for many trials with Steve and a level of respect that few prosecutors ever achieve. His ethics were above reproach. His openness, curiosity, dedication and honesty made each case a passionate search for the truth and resulted in a level of respect that not many prosecutors can achieve with their opponents. As Chris said, 'he was always tough, but always fair.' But more than that, he was an extraordinarily unique and talented individual whose absence will never be equaled. I will miss you terribly, Steve.

Steve was a good and honorable man. He was a worthy opponent, always tough but always fair.
