Sylvia Goldberg Obituary
Imagine a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, mother-in-law, business woman, civic leader, gracious person and just a very lovely woman, and a picture of the silver- haired, SYLVIA JOSEPH GOLDBERG, will appear. Sylvia's mother and father, Anna and John Joseph, a pioneer merchant, had two daughters and two sons. Sylvia was born in Wilburton, Oklahoma, on July 2nd, 1908, one year after Oklahoma Statehood, and died on February 19, 2005. Dorothy Joseph Koin, Denver, is Sylvia's surviving sister. Her brothers, Julian and Leonard predeceased her. Dorothy Pinsker, Shawnee, and Harriet Joseph, Denver are her surviving sisters-in-law. Sylvia and husband, Sam owned and operated Goldberg and Joseph Department Store in Wilburton until Sam's death in 1975. Sylvia lived in Oklahoma City for the last 20 plus years, but when asked where she was from, always replied with great pride, 'Wilburton'. Sylvia attended the University of Illinois and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1930. Her support of the O.U. football team was unwavering and she was a long time season ticket holder. Sylvia taught school in Wilburton during the depression when teachers were paid in 'script' rather than dollars. Sylvia was a Wilburton civic leader, serving on many local boards and committees, and was a guiding light in club and civic functions. She is survived by her children, Harriet Carson, Oklahoma City, Sally Siegel, San Jose, CA and Michael Goldberg, Edmond. Sylvia will be missed by her grandchildren, Joanie Carson Raff and Bart Raff, Laurie Carson Epstein and Jon Epstein, all of OKC, Lisa Siegel and Steve Klipin, Bellingen, Australia, Andrea Siegel, San Francisco, Loren Siegel and David Levin, Oakland, CA, Scott Goldberg, Dallas, and Sarah Goldberg, Arlington, VA. Her great-grandchildren, Natalie & Alex Raff, Adam & Anna Epstein, Lior & Noah Klipin, and Sophie & Gabriel Levin all have treasured memories of 'Sylvie'. Sylvia had a special place in her heart for her sons-in-law, Joel Carson and the late Mark Siegel and her daughter-in-law, Joanne Goldberg. She also had many beloved nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Sylvia's loving caregivers, Frankie Basco, Vera Williams, Marion Zachary, Marlene Peck, Louise Richey, Bernice Brannon and Nina Ngo; Shawn and all the caring staff at Bellevue Nursing Center; and the wonderful nursing staff at 9 East, Integris Baptist Hospital. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes should be directed to the soon to be constructed Goldberg and Joseph Heritage Park, c/o Wilburton Main Street, Inc., Box 856, Wilburton, OK 74578 or Joseph Family Fund, Temple B'nai Israel, 4901 N. Pennsylvania, OKC 73112. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 21, 2005 at Temple B'nai Israel. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Tulsa, corner of Admiral and Yale.
