THOMAS WAKEN Obituary

WakenMay 15, 1931 - Sept 7, 2013 OKLAHOMA CITY Tom passed away late on Saturday morning, Sept. 7, 2013. He was the son of Samuel Paul and Cecilia Ann Jabour Waken, who preceded him in death. He was a beloved Brother and Uncle who is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara Rose and Raoul Carubelli and Josephine Kathryn and Robert A. Haddad; his brother, Samuel Joseph Waken; four nephews, two nieces, four grandnephews and three grandnieces; and a trusted friend to many people he knew over the years. Tom was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Enid, Oklahoma, on May 15, 1931. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic Elementary School and in high school years, Enid Memorial (Catholic) High School, graduating in 1950. He graduated from Phillips University in Enid, and when the family moved to Oklahoma City in 1953, he attended Law School at Oklahoma City University. Tom was employed originally as an accountant with Massey-Ferguson Farm Implement Co.'s Oklahoma City office. When that company closed their offices in town, Tom joined Industrial Finance & Thrift Co (based in New Orleans) and soon became manager (TermPlan) of their main Oklahoma City office. At the same period of time, on his own time, Tom was also interested in the Real Estate business. He soon obtained his Broker's License, and a few years later, the business, organized under the name of Tom Waken Real Estate Co. in 1955, flourished. During the 1970s and into the 1990s, the company, then known as Tom Waken's Associated Brokers, Inc. (1980s), was one of the larger property management companies in Oklahoma City. Over the years, Tom was active in several local business and civic organizations and was happy to devote his spare time with Associated Catholic Charities and his parish church, St. Francis of Assisi. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, followed by an Evening Prayer service at 7 p.m., both at Smith & Kernke Funeral Home, 1401 N.W. 23rd St. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday morning, 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1901 N.W. 18th, Oklahoma City.

I never got to meet Tom but he was husband's cousin and they would email each other. My husband, also a Tom Waken, died in June 2012. My thoughts & prayers are with you & family. My Tom was always so happy when he would hear from your Tom - Now they have eternity to enjoy each other's company.

What a wonderful man! He always treated me with such kindness. I have known him for over 30 years and he will be greatly missed and will always be remembered fondly. I am blessed to have known him. My prayers go out to all his family, including our church family at St. Francis...thank God for his life.
