Wayne H. "Smitty" Smith

Wayne Smith Obituary

In his own uncompromising way, Wayne H. 'Smitty' Smith left this world, due to a stroke on February 11, 2006 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The oldest of two sons, Smitty was born to Everett and Stella Smith on June 2, 1920 in Paola, KS. He joined the Army and served as a 1st Lieutenant Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division in WWII. He served in Holland until he was injured and returned home to the states. He earned two purple hearts for his heroism and bravery. He married his 'Darlin', Helen 'Elise' Smith on March 5, 1941. Their love affair lasted until and even beyond her passing in April, 2001. He received his bachelors degree in business from Kansas University in 1950. After moving to Midland, Texas, he began working for the William Volker Company in 1953. He learned all there was to know, at the time, of the floor covering business and became quite the expert. In 1965, he started his own floor covering and supply company, C&F Distributors in Oklahoma City. Due to his no nonsense, stubborn business attitude and help from his family, C&F blossomed into two other branches located in Tulsa and Little Rock, Arkansas and has been a successful business for more than 40 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing by his lake home at Lake Washita. He also truly enjoyed horse racing, even owning a thoroughbred race horse at one time. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Tulsa. Those who knew Smitty will always remember his stories and how he would laugh with his hearty, deep voice at his own jokes. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen 'Elise'; a daughter, Elise Ann Paul; and his parents. He is survived by one son, Richard Wayne Smith of Oklahoma City; a granddaughter, Sarah Alissa Driscoll and her husband, Rob of Bixby; one grandson, Jeremiah Smith of Oklahoma City; two great-grandchildren, Kyle Glen and Whitney Nicole Driscoll, both of Bixby; and one brother, Don Smith. Services will be held Thursday, February 16 at 11:00AM, at Faith United Methodist Church. If desired, a memorial contribution may be made to Faith United Methodist Church, Tulsa, at the request of the family. Dear Richard,

Even though we've never met you, our heartfelt prayers are there with you & your family. You see, your loss is ours too, as your father's mother, Katherine Miller, your Grandfather Smith's first wife, was our mother too. Smitty had a loving family of two Miller half-brothers & one half-sister (from Katherine's 2nd marriage) here in Kansas City, plus his full sister, Irene Smith Tomney, who lives in Washington, & another half-sister, Norma Jean Brock, who lives in Overland Park, Kansas. We will all miss him very much, as we had lots of happy times together during his trips to Kansas City!!! We sent Smitty a poem for Christmas, & he was crying when he called us to say that the poem was so beautiful, he was going to have it read for his funeral. I told him that would hopefully not be for another 20 years, & he just laughed & said he hoped so too, but then a few weeks later he was gone. We hope that the poem was read for his service. Our lives are so much richer for having him for our brother. He was a dear sweet man, & we thank God for the time we were able to spend with him.
