It has been 9 years and I still think of Bill every time our Tiger football teams get together and many days in between because Bill played a major part in my most famous play as a DePauw football player. He snapped the ball to Dan Breckenridge to hold the ball for me to kick the winning field goal in the Monon Bell game in Crawfordsville in 1966. I remember it because the ball bounced back to Dan who got it on the tee and for some reason I hesitated in starting my kicking motion and that extra time allowed us to make the field goal and win the game 9-7. Wonderful memory. Thank you Bill. We still miss you.

As a former DePauw football teammate of Bill, I want to express the sadness of all the ballplayers who knew him. We will remember the Scaife stories with fondness.

I worked for "Snapper" in the mid-80s at HQ Tactical Air Command when I was a captain and he was a lt colonel. He was bigger than life, a kind and caring person. And, he taught me more about leadership than almost everyone else combined. Over the years I've heard his words coming out of my mouth.

My sincerest condolences to Bill's family and friends. Although I hadn't seen Bill since the mid-80s, my memories of him are still vivid and crisp, as if I had lived them yesterday. It was an honor to have served and to have flown with him. He will continue to be the gold standard against which I measure integrity, dedication to duty, and professionalism - I hope to match his examples as I continue on my journey through life. I will remember him with great fondness.

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Craig was a roommate and fraternity brother of Bills' at DePauw. We talked often with friends about the stories and fun they all had together.
May your memories fuel strength to continue to love life, friends and family.

Bill's passing leaves a large void in our neighborhood. As a new neighbor on the block in the mid-90's, I first met Bill while standing in the driveway. Bill drove his pickup into the drive and introduced himself by handing me a beer from the cooler. I enjoyed his friendship since and regret his passing. Barbara and I will miss his Santa Hat at Christmas parties and as he delivered Poinsettes around the block. He enjoyed pranks with the neighbors. He did not stay in the house to wait for the doorbell to ring on Halloween night, he sat in the driveway to distribute treats and enjoyed talking to kids. He was always willing to help his neighbors. His deep-fried turkey will be missed at Thankgiving. I will miss Bill's insightful redress of the Sooner's shortcomings during OU football watch parties. Yes, Bill's passing leaves us with a large void. I raise an O'Doul's to salute Bill's memory as it lingers in our hearts.

Gayla and I send our sincere condolences. Scaifer was one of the good guys, and my life is the better for having known him. Glad we were able to visit in Aug! Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Charlotte.

Scaifer was a tremendous teammate on several excellent DePauw football teams 1966-68! Would not back down from anyone. As a defensive end I always knew I had my 'back side' covered by Bill! Truly missed!

I was there at Lake Hefner that day along with other people trying to help him. It saddened me that day because I knew it would be hard on the family he left behind. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. It sounds like he was a great man.

Scaifer-what a beauty! A great friend and heck of a linebacker- there are probably some former Ball State, Butler and Wabash running backs who are still sore from Saturday afternoons with Bill. I' very sad, but honored to have called Bill a friend and fellow Tiger!

I made the first entry and forgot to sign my name. I am glad to see so many responses for such an outstanding man. Even through I disliked the Bears, he was always kind about the Redskins.

I am shocked by the news of Bills passing. I flew with Bill on the AWACS in the 80s, and he was a great leader and mentor. I learned a lot from Bill. God bless him and his family in their time of sorrow!

Bill was a fun loving fraternity brother, your worst nightmare if you were trying to catch a pass against him, Best Man at my wedding, and friend. I attended his retirement from the Air Force and understood why the NCO’s loved him so. Rest in peace my friend, I will miss you so much.

Bill Scaife was one of a kind. A generous, loving, mountain of a man. Always a smile on his face I was so blessed to know him and hang out with him. Serving with him and flying with him on the mighty E-3 AWACS was pure pleasure and fun. I learned a lot from him, and shared the advice he gave me to others. He loved my family, my wife and my son Eugene. Bill was incredibly skilled at his profession and an even better human being. Like many others who were touched by this wonderful man I will miss him, here's a toast to you brother Bill 'here here'

Hadn't seen Bill in over 40 years and hadn't spoken to him in the past 3 years but his friendship burns as brightly in me today as it did as fraternity brothers in the 60s. Because once a friend of Bill Scaife, ALWAYS a friend of Bill Scaife.
I miss you, my friend.

Bill was a great college friend. I saw him last when I visited his home in Puerto Rico in 1973. We had a great time at the beach, officer's club and at his house. I wish I'd seen more of him since then.

I will always remember him as a kind and caring man. He was a natural leader who got the best out of his people and himself on every assignment. There were not many that I have known that compare to Bill.
