John Briscoe Obituary

BRISCOE, John Ernest November 19, 1926-July 26, 2014 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Briscoe, 87, of Surrey BC. He passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Peace Arch Hospital. Pre-deceased by wife Patricia (Slater) and survived by daughters Julie (Andrew) and Claire (Lynn); grandchildren Christopher (Monica), Caitlin (Jeremy), Graeme, Rosalind and Kolby, and great-grandchildren Briscoe and Sienna. Dearly missed by his cousin Ann Martin who joined Dad on daily outings. Fondly remembered by treasured cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Dad was a dedicated family man, hard worker (Pulp & Paper Ind.), avid gardener, photographer, and ballroom dancer. He coached soccer during the 70s and 80s for the Surrey United Soccer Club and later Surrey Parks and Rec. He loved to tell of his youth in England and his service in Egypt. He felt lucky to be in Canada with all of its beauty and the opportunities it presented. A memorial service will be held at 11 am Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Colebrook United Church, 5441-125A Street, Surrey, B.C. Online Condolences may be offered at www.victoryfuneralcentre.ca

So sorry to read of "Mr.Briscoe" as we always called him passing. We were lucky enough to have him teach all of our three children (now adults with their own families) the joy of soccer. His patients and enthusiasm left a life long mark on their lives. "The McCormick Family"

Uncle John was our family historian. A storyteller, he graciously edited and retold the tales of our family adventures. He clearly described the character and intent, generous and kind, interesting, and so often humorous. The salmon expedition, the war years, his brother's sea adventures, his sisters' beloved families, his dear daughters and their families, the gardens tended, the histories of shops he frequented, the guiding questions, “Just what is …? How do you …? Did you know …?”---all to pull us in and attend to his rich knowledge of the world in which we live. Though our family reaches across the miles of sea and land—from Canada to England, to the States, to New Zealand and back, we are bonded with our stories and gifted by the courageous traveler every fortunate now and then visiting and sharing these wondrous stories. A grand and generous man, he has gifted us the treasures of our family histories.

So sorry to read about John's passing.Met in the 70's at St. Michaels. He was raising his daughters, working, gardening, dancing, a busy person but always had a moment to talk. We have many fond memories. He shall be missed.
