Thomas Patrick "Tom" McShane, 78
LA GRANGE
Thomas Patrick "Tom" McShane, age 78, of
La Grange, Ky., passed away peacefully on Sept. 24, 2025. Born on Aug. 23, 1947, Tom lived a life that was truly larger than life itself. He was known for his honesty, his unwavering moral compass and his ability to light up a room with his presence and laughter. If Tom was in the room, you knew it.
Tom was a master of both the art and science of real estate and construction. From a young age, he devoted himself to building affordable homes for those in need and teaching the craft of construction to anyone eager to learn. The real estate and construction industries were not always kind to him, yet Tom faced every adversity with grit, faith and integrity building hundreds, if not thousands, of homes for families across his community.
Beyond his professional life, Tom gave tirelessly of himself to making the world a better place. He served meals at the Franciscan Kitchen, stood in the summer heat to collect spare change so children could experience the circus and responded whenever he heard of a need. As a devoted Kosair Shriner, Master Mason, Knights Templar, Christian and supporter of law enforcement, he spent countless hours volunteering and advocating for those who could not speak for themselves children, the poor and even animals.
Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. His family was the center of his world, and he led by example teaching the values of hard work, integrity and compassion. Whether through a handshake, a story, or a hearty laugh, Tom made everyone feel seen and valued. Most importantly, Tom built a legacy, a foundation of honesty, dedication and faith that lives on through his grandchildren.
As Scripture reminds us: "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." Matthew 7:24.
Tom's life was a house built on the rock of Christian values.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Karen McShane; his son, Sean (Carrie) McShane; and his treasured grandchildren, Savannah Leigh and Beau Michael McShane. Tom was preceded in death by his firstborn son, Thomas Patrick McShane III "Pat", who was taken from the family far too soon.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held at Arch L. Heady Funeral Home in La Grange, on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 2:30 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 5 p.m. Friends and family are invited to share memories, laughter and love as we honor a man who was truly unforgettable.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity that serves the vulnerable, reflecting Tom's passion for protecting those who cannot speak or care for themselves. Or, as Tom might have said, "make the world a better place by being kind - in your thoughts, words and actions."
While Tom's passing leaves a space in our hearts, we are comforted knowing that Louise's baby boy is now with his Heavenly Father, reunited with his beloved son Pat, watching over us.
For those who knew Tom, we ask you to honor his memory not only by celebrating his life, but also by supporting and caring for Karen, the love of his life. Let us walk alongside her, just as Tom would have wanted, to make sure she continues to feel the same love, safety and joy he worked so hard to provide.
Please join in celebrating Tom's life and continue his legacy of making the earth a better place.
