Archie Hillman Obituary

ANGELICA - Archie L. Hillman, of Angelica and Belfast, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (March 6, 2013) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville surrounded by family.
He was born May 28, 1923, in Caneadea. On April 28, 1946, he married Doris Graham at the Caneadea United Methodist Church.
He was an alumnus of Belfast Central School and Alfred Ag Tech. A proud veteran of World War II, he served in General Patton's Third Army in France and Belgium.
During his banking career, he held various positions at the First National Bank in Belfast, the Belfast National Bank and the First Trust Company Belfast office. He retired in 1985 from Steuben Trust Company, having served as vice president and chief loan officer. For many years Archie was tax collector for the town of Belfast and also prepared tax returns for many area residents. He was a contact person for the Salvation Army presence in Belfast.
He and his wife were charter members of the Belfast Area Betterment Association, and he served in various capacities in the organization. As "Archie O'Hillman," he participated in every St. Patrick's Day parade held by the Irish Kitchen.
After he and his wife relocated to Sarasota, Fla., he was employed doing tax and accounting work while also working in security at several residential condominium complexes. He retired in 2006 as director of security at the 888 Condo on the Bay in Sarasota.
Archie's favorite pastime was playing baseball and softball. For many years he coached a ladies softball team in Belfast and also collected many great memories as a coach and player with the boys of summer (and spring and fall), the Belfast Shamrocks. He also umpired softball games for many seasons and was an avid spectator for years. While in Sarasota, he played softball for several years in an over-70 league.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Doris, in 2006; his son-in-law and devoted caregiver, Bob Miller; and his sisters, Effie Sweet and Ethel Mae Gowdy. He also was predeceased by his loving aunts, Harriet "Hattie" Snyder, Ethel Sullivan and Bessie Prevorce; and his cherished in-laws, Ransom and Vera Graham.
He is survived by his children, Susan and Daniel Dempsey of Whitesville, Patricia Miller of Angelica, and Michael and Eva Hillman of Belfast. He was the proud grandfather of Rebecca and Rob Magill, Michelle Hillman, Ryan Dempsey and Michael Miller; and the delighted great-grandfather of Alaina Ann Cleveland. Other survivors include his sisters, Mary Jane Lockwood of Caneadea and Dorothy Frungillo of Belmont; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday (March 29, 2013) at 11 a.m. at the Belfast United Methodist Church. Those attending are encouraged to share happy memories of a long life well lived and be prepared to join the family in a rousing chorus of "Take Me out to the Ballgame."
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials made to Angelica Rescue Squad, Belfast United Methodist Church or the SPCA serving Allegany County. To send a remembrance, visit www.brownandpowersfuneralhomes.com.
