Francis De Lancey Obituary
SMETHPORT, Pa. - Francis "Fran" De Lancey passed away on May 18, 2022, in Bethel Park, after a courageous bout with lung cancer.
Fran was born Feb. 25, 1943, in Harrisburg, the younger son of Sherman R. De Lancey and Dorothy (Adams) De Lancey. Fran married Mary Sharon Mayo, of Smethport, in April of 1969.
He was a native of Newport and a 1961 graduate of Newport High School. Fran graduated from Shippensburg University in 1966. He earned his master of education from Shippensburg in 1969. Additional graduate studies were done at the Pennsylvania State University and State University of New York, College at Cortland.
He taught in the Lower Dauphin School District in the 1966-1967 school year. In the Fall of 1967 he started a 34-year teaching career in Smethport.
Fran was the Smethport correspondent for the Bradford Era from 1978 to 2021.
He had a strong sense of community. He was a member of the Smethport Area Jaycees; a life member of the McKean County Fair Association; McKean County Historical Society; and Smethport Volunteer Fire Department. Fran was also active in the county and state Democratic Committee. He was a member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church, where he was a lector, usher, eucharistic minister and served on the Pastoral Council as president and secretary. Fran also belonged to the Knights of Columbus (3rd degree).
Fran is survived by his son, Andy, daughter in-law, Karen and grandsons, Samuel and Brandon De Lancey of Bethel Park; sisters-in-law, Kate (Dan) Nichols and Maureen (Harry) Barkley; brother-in-law, Michael Mayo; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Fran is preceded in death by his parents Sherman and Dorothy; older brother, Louis A. De Lancey and wife, Sharon De Lancey.
Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday (May 22, 2022) in the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., Smethport. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday (May 23, 2022) at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Smethport.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hillman Cancer Center, Pittsburgh, in his memory.
