Jack R. Sutley, May 3, 1929–Sept. 16, 2025
NAPLES, Fla. - Jack R. Sutley, 96, of Naples, formerly of Allegany, N.Y., passed away peacefully Tuesday (Sept. 16, 2025).
Born May 3, 1929, Jack was the son of the late Leon and Gladys Daugherty Sutley. He was the eldest of three siblings, Gene, Jerry and JoAnn, all of whom predeceased him.
Jack was married to Mary I. Markert on Sept. 1, 1957, until her passing on April 3, 1986. He later married Carolynn E. Clapp on April 11, 1987. She predeceased him Sept. 24, 2008.
He was a graduate of Otto High School and Westbrook Academy.
Jack began his professional life as the office manager of Potter Lumber Company. In 1959, he joined the Allegany Central School system, where he served as business manager and district clerk until his retirement in 1990.
A devoted member of his community, Jack was a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Allegany, where he served faithfully in various leadership roles. He was also a life member of the Olean Lodge 252 Free and Accepted Masons and was honored in 1998 with a Distinguished Service Award from the Grand Lodge.
Jack gave generously of his time and talents to numerous local organizations. He served as trustee and president of the Allegany Public Library for 19 years, and trustee and president of the former Allegany Cemetery Association for over 45 years. He was also a member of the Town of Allegany Planning Board for 13 years.
In addition, he volunteered as a driver for Interfaith Caregivers and participated in the Compeer Program, continuing his lifelong commitment to service and helping others.
He is survived by three daughters, Dr. Lynn (Anthony) Hartmann of Naples, Laura (Steven) Webb of Cypress, Texas and Anne (Gregg) Blocher of Munster, Ind. He is also survived by four stepsons, Christopher Clapp of Wilmington, Ohio, Michael Clapp of Allegany, N.Y., Patrick (Tracy) Clapp of Arlington, Mass. and Daniel Clapp of Missoula, Mont. Jack leaves behind six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Allegany at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or the Allegany Public Library, two places that meant so much to Jack during his life.
Jack will be remembered for his steadfast faith, lifelong dedication to community, and deep love for his family.
