James Dennis Walterich

OLEAN - James Dennis Walterich, 74, of Olean, passed away peacefully in the loving presence of his family on Sunday (July 27, 2025) at Absolut Care of Salamanca. He had resided there for the past two months.

Born Oct. 13, 1950, in Buffalo, he was the son of James F. Walterich and Mary Sullivan.

He attended Walsh High School and later Portville Central School.

Jim worked for Council Optometric in Olean for over five years until he established HandTech Computer Shop in Olean. He became knowledgeable about computer systems at the time it was becoming popular with the general public. He was able to help individuals with home computer setups, and area businesses with computer networks prior to their having IT departments.  Another aspect of his job was testing equipment and offering feedback for Microsoft.

He enjoyed years of volunteering for the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts in Allegany and was one that was a capable litigator of local issues between citizens of the community.  Another enjoyment was as a volunteer campaigner for State Senator Cathy Young and NYS Assemblyman Joseph Giglio.

Jim enjoyed woodworking out of his shop at home and was most proud of the full-scale carousel horse he made.

He leaves behind four children, Carl Walterich of Allegany, Carleen Walterich of Olean, Blaine Walterich of Olean and Bryce Walterich of Allegany; and three grandchildren, Murphy Dutton of Olean, Aiden Follet of Buffalo and Aryia Foster of Olean.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Justin Walterich; and a sister, Marie Sullivan.

The family invites friends to a celebration of Jim's life beginning with a memorial visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025, at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road, Olean. An informal time of remembrance will begin at 2 p.m.
