Lisa Hollowell Obituary

WAKE FOREST, N.C. - Lisa Lynn Hollowell, 50, formerly of Washington, D.C., and Virginia Beach, Va., before moving to Wake Forest at the end of last year, passed away Wednesday (Jan. 11, 2017).

She was born in Olean, N.Y., to Gerald P. and Linda R. Hollowell. She graduated from Fredonia High School, followed by the University at Buffalo with a BSE in industrial engineering and a master's degree in national resource strategy from the National Defense University, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C.

Lisa spent her last 25 years in private industry and government service with the Department of the Navy, working as a technical engineer for submarine and surface ship combat systems in concepts, designs, warfare analysis, system engineering, integration and program management, including working for the U.S. Joint Forces Command, where she led the Joint Command and Control Futures Planning and Operations Branch. She worked at Dam Neck in Virginia Beach, Va.; the Pentagon; and most recently for the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.

Lisa received many Excellence and Meritorious Unit Commendations from NAVSEA and other divisions for the outstanding dedication and many achievements over the years. Her executive director praised her as "one of our brightest system engineers … with unwavering passion for technical excellence and commitment to the fleet."

Lisa loved to travel and cruise the oceans with her sister, family, and friends, both personally and for work. She has explored most of the United States and has been to many countries around the world. Lisa always found joy in doing for others to ensure every event went recognized and being there for anyone needing anything, no matter how busy her life was.

Lisa is survived by her parents, Gerald P. and Linda R. Hollowell of Wake Forest; a sister, Michele (Robert) Babcock of Ormond Beach, Fla.; a brother, Michael Hollowell of Franklinton; several loving aunts, uncles and cousins; and many amazing friends and colleagues.

A celebration of life will be held for family and friends in Olean at a later date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or Duke Cancer Institute.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bright Funeral Home, 405 S. Main St., Wake Forest.

The world lost a great friend, dedicated employee, and patriot and we feel this loss heavily. Lisa was one of a kind-- her kindness and loyalty was unmatched. She was selfless and put the needs of others above her own and was such a devoted friend. I hope you are resting peacefully, dear Lisa.

Lisa was an incredible friend, mentor, and leader. She was always there to lend an ear and provide advice or a helping hand. She helped me find my first home. The day I moved in, she was there with bags of cleaning materials, took me to dinner, and helped unpack. She never missed a birthday, even for my son. She celebrated special moments, threw birthday parties, wedding showers and baby showers for friends like me. Lisa had a special knack for identifying the talents in her team members. She was an excellent leader and brought our the best in every member of her team. She worked tirelessly and devoted her life to the military, especially the Navy, to ensure sailors had the best equipment and training possible. I have tremendous respect for her ethics, selflessness, and professional accomplishments.

You are loved and missed more than any words can describe. Enjoy that chocolate cake for your bday!

Lisa is simply one of the best people I will ever know. I have known her for 27 years and I loved her like she was my own sister.
Nobody could measure up to the type of thoughtful, kind and compassionate person she was. Lisa never thought of herself, always others- even as she battled this horrible disease, she cared about everyone else and how they were handling it.
Lisa loved her work, those of us who were friends with her outside of her know that because we could see the energy and passion she showed when talking about her work and the people she worked with. You didn't want to be the office slacker with Lisa around!
Karen and I, along with our kids have a hole in our lives that can never be filled, but we know that we are better people for having known and loved Lisa.
Our deepest sympathies to Lisa's mom and dad, Michelle, Michael, Bob and all of Lisa's family and friends.
Rest in peace sweet Lisa, we love you and we will miss you forever. Love, Jim, Karen, Michael and your Goddaughter Ashley.

I have worked with Lisa over the past 25 years on and off, starting with our first DoD jobs at the same contractor. Lisa was a fun, energetic, intelligent, motivated and caring person. For those of us who were lucky enough to get to know her well, she would do anything for you and was a true friend. She will be missed by many and the loss that is felt is great. Rest In Peace my dear friend.

Lisa excelled in a tough business, but never lost her cheerful attitude. She made all of our burdens a bit lighter. She will be missed every day as we carry on the good work that she did in support of our nation's sailors.
