In 1936, 12-year-old Jeanne along with her younger sister, Barbara, and grandmother, hitchhiked from Livingston, Mont. to Paulsbo, Wash. Jeanne's grandmother, Mary L. Hammond, was a large influence in her life and affectionately known as "Big Grandma."
