Mary Claire Kanick Granger

BELFAST - Mary Claire Granger, age 84, of Belfast, passed away Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, after a long battle with dementia.

Claire was born Aug. 15, 1941, in Buffalo, the daughter of Catherine Shevlin Kanick and Frank Kanick.

She graduated from Buffalo's Mt. Mercy Academy in 1958.

Claire gave birth to a son, William (Bill Kanick) Granger on June 22, 1965, and married Jerry Granger on July 22, 1972 in Friendship.

Claire was very active in the American Legion Post 1504 Auxiliary in Belfast, and she worked as a bookkeeper for clients in Allegany County, as well as the Town of Friendship.

In her later years, Claire was often seen walking the streets of Belfast and, until the end, the hallways of her memory care facility.

She is survived by her siblings, Catherine and Mike (Patricia) Kanick; her son, Bill (Jessica); two grandchildren, Veronica and Curtis Granger; and two step-grandchildren, Daniel and Will Godfrey.

Claire was predeceased by her oldest sister, Patricia (Chuck); and her husband, Jerry.

No visitation or funeral services are planned.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Kalec Funeral Home, Elmira.
