Richard Layfield Obituary

OLEAN - Richard D. Layfield, of 1978 Layfield Drive, Olean, passed away Thursday (Jan. 14, 2021) at his home, surrounded by his family.

Born Dec. 2, 1939, in Bradford, Pa., he was the son of William and Doris Haskins Layfield.

On Oct. 17, 1959, at Sacred Heart Church, in Portville, he married his wife of 61 years, Ethel Button, who survives.

Richard was a 1959 graduate of Portville Central School. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1959, after his high school graduation, serving until 1962.

Throughout his working career, he was employed at McGraw-Edison, St. Bonaventure University and retired from St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in 2001.

Dick enjoyed hunting and carpentry. In his lifetime, he built two homes and a camp. His latest project was a covered bridge he built for his granddaughter's upcoming wedding.

He was an avid Buffalo Bills and Sabres fan. In his later years, he enjoyed bingo, especially at Ischua bingo.

He will be remembered for his thoughtfulness and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family.

Surviving are two sons, William (Chris Cole) Layfield of Hudson, Fla. and Michael (Marilyn White) Layfield of Melbourne, Fla.; grandchildren, Caylie Layfield and Kelsey (Brandon O'Keefe) Layfield; a great-granddaughter, Alayna; a beloved sister, Betty Williams; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Charles F. Roberts; and a sister, Anna Paruolo.

A celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date and at the convenience of the family.

Memorials in Richard's name may be made to HomeCare & Hospice, 1225 W. State St., Olean, NY 14760.

I was sorry to hear about Dick’s passing. Him and I had become acquainted through the visits we had at the Olean Town Hall. Dick was one of the sweetest person I knew and was always a pleasure to visit with him. I enjoyed our conversations. Please accept my heart felt sympathy on his passing. He was a true Gentleman. Deepest sympathy.
