Craig McVea Obituary

McVea, Craig C.

November 6, 1962 - November 26, 2022

Craig McVea passed away peacefully in the arms of his family at home after a long battle with cancer. He was a loving father to three sons and an adoring husband to his wife Kris of over 35 years of marriage.

Born in Omaha to Ken and Peggy McVea, Craig was the youngest of three sons. He attended Northwest High and graduated from UNO where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He later earned a law degree from Creighton and a Masters of Economics from North Carolina State University.

Craig was a stay-at-home dad for over 25 years raising his three sons and found great joy in being involved in their lives. He coached his sons in soccer, attended countless swimming and cross-country meets, and his pride in their academic and artistic achievements radiated out of him. Gender role reversal is not always easy, but Craig made lifelong friends with many amazing women. Craig was also physically active throughout his entire life and shared that love of sports with his sons. He was a high school gymnast, black belt in Tae Kwon Do, ran multiple marathons, and loved to go biking, climb mountains in Colorado and even took up curling.

Later, when his kids were older, Craig returned to work as an immigration attorney. He found his role assisting immigrants on their path to citizenship meaningful, and he loved his coworkers at the Juan Diego Center. Craig was a longtime volunteer at the Nebraska Humane Society. Throughout his life, he was a person who enjoyed helping and caring for others.

Craig was a big Husker and Creighton volleyball fan. He loved the adventure of traveling and exploring new places and cultures. His favorite thing was to share a glass of wine with his neighbors, a cup of coffee with a friend or a leisurely meal with his family. Craig was loved for his wry humor, his playfulness and his loyalty to his friends and loved ones.

Survived by wife Kris; sons Patrick, Andrew, and Jackson; mother-in-law Ginger Petersen-Britt; sisters-in-law Vicki and husband Scott Philben, Pam and husband Jeff Lanza, and Donna McVea; brother-in-law Eric Petersen; special nieces and nephews and their children: Marlo and Jason Tomich (Madi, Kaden, and Avery), Andrea and Corey Skradski (Mason, Lucas, Cooper, and Sloane), Kristopher and Rachel McVea (Vera, Minka, and Dasha), Ali and Andrew Pentico (Hendrik), Kerry Philben and Tom Beasley, Mike and Carrie Philben (Lily), Chris Lanza, Angela Lanza, and Jennifer Petersen.

Preceded in death by parents Ken and Peggy McVea; brothers Kenny and wife Debbie and David McVea; father-in-law Charles Petersen; brother-in-law Charles Petersen.

My thoughts and prayers for Kris and Craig's sons.
I met Craig in middle school and reconnected years later. He is a forever friend who always had a smile to share. My heart is sad with the loss of him. I send a smile and a hug to him as he joins his family members in heaven.
