Daniel Wolford Cook III

1935 - 2018

Daniel Wolford Cook III was born on January 16, 1935, in Lincoln, NE, and passed away on January 25, 2018, in Dallas, TX. He was 83.

Dan was graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1953, attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and earned a BA in Spanish from Stanford University in 1957. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander in the Pacific. After serving, he received his MBA from Harvard University in 1961. Upon graduation, he joined Goldman Sachs in New York. In 1964, he married Gail Bucholz in Omaha, NE. They lived in St. Louis, MO, and ultimately moved to Texas in 1968 where Dan opened the Dallas office of Goldman Sachs.

As a retired Senior Partner of Goldman Sachs, Dan served on the boards of directors of TD Ameritrade, Brinker International and Centex Corporation, and the philanthropic boards of Southern Methodist University, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Dallas Museum of Art, Boy Scouts of America, Parks and Wildlife Foundation of Texas, Southwestern Medical Foundation and National Review. He was the Chairman of the Vice President's Residence Foundation in Washington, D.C. during the Bush-Cheney Administration.

As an avid hunter and fisherman, Dan enjoyed traveling the world with friends for unique adventures. His love for hunting and politics were surpassed only by his passion for Nebraska Football.

Dan is survived by his wife Gail B. Cook and their five children Dan, Chad, Cherie, Corbin and Heather and their spouses Brenda, Nicole, Toby, Amy, and Nate, respectively, and his 13 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents George B. Cook and Margaret C. Cook of Lincoln, NE, and his brother G. Bradford Cook. His father, George B. Cook, was the CEO of Bankers Life, known as Ameritas Life Insurance today.

The Cook Family thanks Stacy, Aisha, Digna, Tomasz and all the doctors and nurses at UT Southwestern who provided extraordinary care over the last several years as well as his long-term physician, Dr. Neal Sklaver.

Funeral arrangements are private. A celebration of his life will be held soon.
