Coach Mike Denney

April 26, 2025

This Poem I composed for Dan "Danny O" Oliverius for his Family, Friends, Teammates, Coaches, Students and Wrestlers to Celebrate, Remember and Honor him on this day.
May God Bless these words I say.
I see all of you who cared about him so deep.
May God cover you and all of us with Endurance and Courage to climb this mountain of Dan´s loss that is so steep.
The hurt goes to the core.
Because that hurt cuts so deep God will need to cover us even more.
It was a Privilege, Pleasure and Honor to Coach him and be part of his Life´s Journey that was a "Gift" to Bonnie and me.
"Danny O" was a "Gift" to His Family, His Teams, His Teammates, His Coaches, His Wrestlers and His Friends and those around him. All of you would agree.
Dan made His Dojo and Every Dojo he was in a "Better Place".
We All are Better from being in his Space.
As a Wrestler and a Coach he was a Leader, Loyal, a Fighter, a Competitor, a Soldier, a Stick and Rudder Man and "Black Belt" Leather Tough.
He was a "Leader by Example" when times got rough.
"Danny O" will always and forever be remembered as someone who was a Wrestlers´ Wrestler, a Blast to be around, there wasn't a day that went by that Dan never brought the "Work Power" to be Better, a Great Teammate and a Great Friend. He did anything and everything you could ever ask.
He was always ready to step up when called. His Family, Wrestling Teams, Coaches, Teammates, Students, Wrestlers and Friends Loved him what more can we say.
That was just his way.
Dan Loved Teaching and Coaching Wrestling. That Brought Great Joy to his life. There were Wrestling Medals, a State Championship for that Albion Town, and Much Decorated Success next to his name.
But there was much more that he Brought and Gave to the Dojo´s in his game.
Dan had so many who Loved him in your Hearts down so deep.
May God cover You with us to help You climb that Healing Mountain that is so steep.
He was a "God Gift" to all of You and You to him. It was a "Gift" so true.
May His Memory continue to be a "Gift" to You.
He accomplished much and was successful in many things in his life´s race.
He worked hard to manage some things he struggled with. He worked hard to do it with Strength and Grace.
All the Great Memories of him don´t ever erase.
The Prayer the Family Prays and We Pray now is that Dan has found some Peace.
God will welcome him with open arms because God´s Peace Passes All Understanding. We must remember that down deep in Our Hearts and keep that Strong.
Someday We will meet "Danny O" again and he will welcome Us with open arms. God´s Peace will be the Song.

Dan and I spent time together on the Nebraska All Star Wrestling Team in 1974 and became friends from then on in the wrestling community. He was a great guy and was very passionate about wrestling. He will be sorely missed. Prayers to his family.

Dan Oliverius was a remarkable leader whose legacy of success in the sport of wrestling and in building character was truly unmatched. He instilled self-confidence, resilience, and integrity in every athlete he coached. His influence went far beyond the mat, and the lessons he taught will carry on for generations. Rest in Peace, Danny O. Your impact lives on in all of us!

To the family of Mr. Oliverius, you have my deepest sympathies. I was an English and Speech student at Ryan, and he gave me an "A" on a speech where we had to demonstrate the use of something... I chose a rod and reel. Even though the bobber hit the light in the ceiling when I drew back and casted, I kept going and he gave me the "A" for that reason. A very caring and decent man, excellent teacher who brought out the best in a person, and for that, I'm forever grateful. I regularly taught classes during my career with the US Postal Service and received much of my confidence in those awkward teenage years in his class. Mr. O also instilled confidence by asking me to be an announcer for a wrestling meet at Springfield Platteview High School, as I was a statistician for the team. You made a difference ! Mr. Rieschl, it was nice to see your comment on this platform as well. Best regards to all who knew him, Deb

I met Dan once and found him to be a very warm and funny man. I wish I could have had the pleasure of knowing him better. I know he will be missed by many. Kati, my heart goes out to you and Sam. God bless you and may He give you the strength to go on without Dan. If there is anything I can do for you, please don't hesitate to call.

Coach Oliverius started coaching in Beatrice when I was a sophomore. He made a difference in our lives in so many ways. Our sport was wrestling but the goal was to take a bunch kids from small town Nebraska and show them a better way forward. He did that for me and so many more I'm certain. We loved him for the values he instilled in us. And I will miss his messages of encouragement.

I was fortunate to work with Dan at Archbishop Ryan H.S. and Saint Joseph H.S. Dan was a very gifted educator and coach, never taking a shortcut in what he brought to the classroom or wrestling mat. He always put the students/athletes first. He is already being missed. Thoughts and prayers. Ken Rieschl

Rest in Peace Dan. Knew you many years ago in Albion when we were next door neighbors. As you are a bit younger we kind of lost track over the years. My condolences to the family at this time of great loss.

Rest in peace Dan. I had the privilege to be a student of yours at Beatrice and in later life to be a friend. You mentored countless people in this life and that mattered. No more suffering for you and peace is yours.

I was one of BHS wrestling team's "Orange Aides." High School was hard, but the best part of it for me was being an Orange Aide. Coach O was everything a teacher should be, especially in the difficult teen times. He was fun. He was wise. He was caring. I'm sorry the world, and especially his family, have lost this great man, but I'm glad he's not suffering. And I am so blessed to have known him. So many of us are. Thank you coach for all the times you made this awkward, self-conscious girl do the wrestling hand signals routine that I made up. I acted like I hated it, but I think you knew it gave me a sense of pride, and thus self-confidence. You changed lives, Coach O. Enjoy your rest.

Dan made an impact on all the wrestlers. Boomer was his number one fan when he was a live. Dan never gave up on him. Boomer would say that Dan would remind the players we win as a team and lose as a team. All one big family. I just know they met at the gate and had their first wrestling match.
