Frances Grabbert Obituary

Grabbert, Frances

September 11, 1934 - December 12, 2023

Frances Shell Grabbert, 89, joined her husband, Robert, in their eternal home on December 12, 2023. Fran was born in Boone, IA and graduated from Concordia College in Seward, NE and the University of Omaha. Fran accepted a call to teach elementary grades at Cross Lutheran Church in Omaha where she met Robert Grabbert, an eligible bachelor from the congregation. They were married on October 19, 1956.

Fran transitioned to the Omaha Public School District where she again taught in elementary grades until becoming the first elementary school librarian in the Omaha Public School System, serving at Crestridge School.

After retirement, Fran served as librarian at St. Mark Lutheran Church, enjoyed growing roses, tomatoes, potatoes and other vegetables, which she shared with neighbors and the members of St. Mark. Fran also golfed in two leagues and, with Bob, worked out daily at Genesis Health Club in Omaha for many years.

They lived in the same home for sixty-six years until moving to Aksarben Village Senior Living in March, 2023. Fran mourned Bob's passing in October, 2023, and looked forward to joining him in heaven.

SERVICES will be at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home, 5701 Center St., Omaha, on Thursday, December 21st, at 11 a.m., preceded by a one-hour VISITATION. BURIAL will be in Westlawn Memorial Park. A luncheon will follow at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to St. Mark Lutheran Church and School, 1821 N 90th St., Omaha, NE 68114.

I worked with Fran at Crestridge School as a classroom teacher from 1980 to 1986, She was a knowledgeable, insightful and fun school media specialist. Fran knew all students at Crestridge by name and she worked to motive youngsters to enjoy varied types of books. She was helpful in supplying books to teachers to complement areas of study. Fran had high expectations of all students and was a no nonsense educator with high standards of children who entered her library.

My condolences to her family, colleagues and friends.

Fran was an enthusiastic and loving librarian. She was a silent mentor to me as I entered the field. I listened and watched as Fran shared her love of books and children. I so admired and respected her.

So sad to hear of the loss of Fran Grabbert (and Bob earlier this year). Bob and Fran both played golf with me in the Omaha Sports Club Friday night golf league. I remember they were both very friendly and physically active, they walked most of the time but took a cart on those warm days at Elmwood Golf Course (they both enjoyed golf). Sometime later Bob might have hurt his hip and they both dropped out of the league.
I was very surprised to hear later that they were "Uncle and Aunt" of my good friend Ann Leland where we both played volleyball together in the Omaha Sports Club and shared birthdays.
Rest in peace Bob and Fran.
