James Hawk Obituary

Hawk, James V.
Apr 3, 1924 - Dec 19, 2011
Preceded in death by wife, Beverly E. Hawk; parents, Lester and Mamie Hawk; son, Jim Hawk II, who passed away on Sep 28, 1973. Survived by daughter, Anne; daughter-in-law, Jeanie Hawk; grandsons, Jim Hawk III and wife Missy, David Hawk and wife Megan; great-grandsons: Jim Hawk IV, Johnny Hawk, and Will Hawk. Mr. Hawk was both an entrepreneur and nature enthusiast who achieved four decades of success in the truck trailer industry that bears his name. A native of Woodbine, Iowa and raised in Council Bluffs, Mr. Hawk was a World War II Navy veteran who traveled the world before settling back down in Council Bluffs where he began the Jim Hawk Truck Trailer Company. In 1974 Mr. Hawk initially had nine employees who were involved with the selling, repair and service of semi-trailer trucks. Forty years later the company had expanded to 400 employees in ten locations throughout the Midwest, including Council Bluffs. Mr. Hawk cited having the right product, personnel and location as the key to his business success. Mr. Hawk and his wife Beverly were married for 64 years and together raised two children and enjoyed two grandsons, Jim and David, who now own the company. A philanthropist at heart, Mr. Hawk generously gave several gifts to the Council Bluffs community over the years. The Council Bluffs Police Department credits Mr. Hawk for helping jump start their canine enforcement program by initially purchasing two dogs, and twenty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Hawk initiated the Jim and Bev Hawk Scholarship Fund, which annually awards scholarships to Thomas Jefferson High School graduating seniors. Mr. Hawk pledged generously to Alegent Health Foundation to help fund the purchase of 16 EKG/defibrillators to be installed in Pottawattamie County squads. In 2007 he received the Heritage Award in Business from Alegent Health Mercy Hospital Foundation, and at the time of his death he was serving as honorary co-chairman of the Midlands Humane Society Campaign Fund. An avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish, Mr. Hawk was very involved in Ducks Unlimited and preserving the habitat of wild game birds.
SERVICES Friday, 9:30am at Cutler-O'Neill Chapel with Rev. Meg Rhodes, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, officiating. Private interment, Ridgewood Cemetery. Memorials to Midlands Humane Society or St. Paul's Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends Thursday, 5pm to 7pm at Cutler-O'Neill Chapel.

My personal condolences to the Hawk family. I and my family met Jim thru his friend John Russel back in 1984, when he brought his boat to Two Rivers Wi to fish salmon. He hired me and my dad to run his boat, he treated us royally. My dad passed 1year ago december and always spoke of Jim in the highest regard. We kept in touch the past few years and he will be missed. 1ST Captain Patrick Wondrash & Family .Fair Winds & Following Seas my Friend
