James Quinn Obituary

Quinn, James D., M.D.

June 6, 1937 - October 24, 2022

Jim Quinn, age 85, passed away quite suddenly on October 24, 2022. Jim was born on June 6, 1937, to Edward and Mary (Graham) Quinn in Oskaloosa, IA. He was the youngest of their four children, following older siblings: Edward Jr., Mary Ellen, and John. In 1939, his father obtained a job at Paxton Vierling Steel and ended his job with the CCC, and the Quinn family moved to Omaha. Jim attended Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School and Creighton Prep High School. He obtained both an Undergraduate Degree and Medical Degree at Creighton University, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology after a residency at UNMC/Creighton. He married his High School sweetheart, Betty Fitzgerald, on December 26, 1960. They had six children: Mary Beth, Jim, Sean, Kathy, Colleen, and Kevin, and he was a very supportive father.

Jim practiced medicine for over 50 years. Early in his career he served in the Nebraska National Guard as a Major commanding a MASH Unit, and taught at the Creighton School of Medicine. He co-founded an OB/GYN practice with Dr. Robert Langdon and advocated for the health of both women and their unborn children. In line with his medical practice, in the 1960's and 70's, Jim and his wife, Betty, assisted and provided housing for unwed pregnant mothers. On a global scale, they also hosted international students for many years. He was a devoted son to his mother until her passing at 103, and a good brother and a great uncle to 12 nieces and nephews. He loved entertaining family and friends at home, from weekly Sunday night BBQ's to huge holiday parties. He was a life-long sports fan, being a Creighton Jaybacker and a College World Series fan. He had many close friends with whom he enjoyed playing squash, attending sports, sharing meals and socializing. He loved the spring and summer when he prepared a huge garden, yielding lots of produce and flowers which he generously shared with so many people. Like his Quinn parents and grandparents, and his brother and other Quinn relatives, every year he planted a bed of red salvia. His garden was his happy place.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; siblings; and daughters, Marybeth Weber and Kathleen Ann Quinn. He is survived by and will be greatly missed by his wife of 62 years, Betty H. (Fitzgerald) Quinn; children: James E., Sean W. (Angie), Colleen Monsef (Eric), and Kevin (Lori); son-in-law, Mark Weber; 12 grandchildren: John Weber (Shannan), Julia, Jimmy, Joe and Jack, Tal and Peter, Elizabeth and Katherine Monsef, and Jessica, Megan and Ryan; and one great-grandchild, Calvin Weber.

VISITATION: Sunday, October 30, 3-5pm, followed by VIGIL SERVICE at 5pm at the WEST CENTER CHAPEL. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Monday, October 31, 10:30am at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 6116 Dodge St. INTERMENT: Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Creighton University School of Medicine.

I´m so sorry to hear about Dr. Quinn´s passing. He delivered two of our children and helped us through the pain of a miscarriage on a Good Friday. I selected him to be my OB/GYN because of the compassion and guidance he gave a good friend who was unmarried and pregnant. I just couldn´t believe a Dr could be so kind but he was. My prayers are with your family.

Dawn and the kids and I are very sorry to hear about your loss. Dr. Quinn had a major impact on our lives. He helped us through the stillborn birth of our first child, and encouraged and supported us with such compassion. He also delivered into the world our three precious children. We love Dr. Quinn and will remember him always. Peace and Love be with you.
