John Oscar Lieben

John Lieben was born on September 22, 1944, in New York City, one week after his father Major Jack Lieben's regiment had shipped out from New York to Europe during World War II.

John grew up in Omaha and graduated from St. Margaret Mary School and Creighton Prep. For college he attended the University of the Americas in Mexico City and Creighton University, and graduated from New York University. He later studied bookbinding at Roehampton College in London, England, calligraphy at the University of Oregon School of Art + Design in Eugene, Oregon, and shamanism in Peru. He lived in New York, London, Atlanta, Colorado, Northern California, Oregon and Washington State before returning to Omaha in 2021.

John was a poet and a dreamer. He wrote poetry and books, was a book editor, a calligrapher, a carpenter and a landscape designer. For the last 25 years of his life he studied the geometry of art, architecture and nature. He called himself a geometer. One book, Sacred Geometry for Artists, Dreamers and Philosophers, Secrets of Harmonic Creation, was published by an imprint of Simon and Schuster in 2018. He was working on another book when he died on December 28, 2024, at age 80.

John was a kind and gentle man.

John's parents Theodore Jack Lieben and Eileen B. Lieben preceded him in death. He is survived by his brothers Pete (Joan) and Jeff (Anne), his good friend Susan Marriott, three nephews, two nieces and eight grandnieces and grandnephews. Private memorial.
