Kurt Guenther Obituary

Guenther, Kurt Joseph

June 9, 1937 - February 21, 2023

Kurt Joseph Guenther, age 85, of Omaha, died February 21, 2023 at his home. Born on June 9, 1937, in Bad Duerkheim, Germany, to Friedrich and Maria Guenter. He grew up with one sister and four brothers. He attended public school in his hometown. Following graduation, he enrolled in the trade school of Muensterschwarzach Abbey, learning stone masonry, earning a journeyman certificate dated September 15, 1956. He entered the Monastery in 1954 and professed vows on September 26, 1956.

In 1962, he was assigned to the Benedictine Mission House in Schuyler NE, where he assisted in the mission office. In 1966, dispensation from his vows were granted.

The next chapter of life's journey was an eight-year stint in California. In 1973, he accepted the job offer as cook and housekeeper for the Benedictine community of Schuyler. In 1982, he became kitchen manager and chef for the Jesuit community of Creighton Prep in Omaha. Following retirement, he volunteered at the school cafeteria of St. Robert Bellarmine and helped in the kitchen of the Omaha Country Club. From 2010 to 2015, he worked again for the Missionary Benedictines of Christ the King Priory in Schuyler as their cook.

His artistic talents graced many events for which he created ice sculptures, especially during his years at Creighton Prep. Kurt was always ready to help. He is remembered as a devoted Catholic and gentle person. Death came unexpectedly.

The monks of Christ the King Priory of Schuyler will Celebrate the MEMORIAL MASS FOR KURT on Saturday, March 11, at 10:30am at St. Benedict Center. His ashes will be Interred in the Monastery Cemetery.

Kurt has cared for our community for many years, often under difficult circumstances. His dedication and friendship over the almost 50 years that I knew him will not be forgotten. Rest in peace, Kurt!

I met Kurt 22 yrs ago at Prep while working as a housekeeper for the Jesuits. Over the years, Kurt became part of our family. He enjoyed watching our sons grow-up, cooking and baking for our family, sharing his other artistic talents, and just spending time together. We will cherish all the wonderful memories of sharing family activities with Kurt and his unexpected visits - usually dropping off some wonderfully made food. We loved Kurt and Kurt loved us.
