Margaret Lim Obituary

Lim, Margaret Hyo-Jin

April 22, 1958 - February 3, 2022

Margaret Lim, longtime proud Nebraska and Iowa resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 3rd, 2022, in New York City at her mother's home. She had been receiving treatments for a very rare cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York since September, 2020.

Margaret was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 22, 1958 where her father, Dr. Thomas Lim, was working as one of the physicians at the Lovelace Clinic doing medical testing on the 'Mercury Seven' the seven original American astronauts for Project Mercury.

Margaret began her lifelong passion for music in Suzuki cello studies with Yvonne Tait (past President of the Suzuki Association of the Americas) at the age of six in Tucson, Arizona. Subsequent studies were with Helena Bell, Carol Work, Raya Garbousova and at the Juilliard School in New York with Channing Robbins where she earned both Bachelor and Masters of Music degrees. Additionally, she received her Suzuki teaching certification from the School for Strings in New York.

Margaret performed professionally for over 35 years with the Omaha Symphony and the Midlands String Quartet and was a devoted teacher to her students at the Omaha Conservatory of Music. As the Music Series Coordinator at the Joslyn Art Museum from 1991-2005, Margaret combined her worlds of administrative skills with her musical knowledge to program and produce the wildly popular series: Jazz on The Green, Bagels & Bach, First Friday Jam and Holiday Under Glass.

During her battle with cancer, Margaret never ceased to amaze those around her with her strength, courage and optimism that she was going to beat her disease.

She is mourned and missed by her surviving family which includes her mother, Kimberly Lim; sisters, Diane Lim and Elizabeth Lim Dutton; brothers-in-law, Dr. Andrew Lim and Lawrence Dutton; nieces and nephews, Elissa Lim Berven and Kelsey Lim, Luke, Jesse and Samuel Dutton.

She was delighted to know about the arrival of her first grandnephew, Bode Lim Berven on January 5th, 2022.

Many thanks to everyone who has contacted Margaret's family asking about memorial contributions. Her wishes: Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York City; Omaha Symphony; Omaha Conservatory of Music; Visiting Nurse Service of New York.

A Celebration of Life is currently being planned in honor of Margaret's memory for this coming summer in Omaha, Nebraska.

I just recently heard of Margaret's passing and was deeply saddened. I had the privilege of being one of her classmates in junior high and high school. She was absolutely one of the most wonderful individuals that I was blessed to know in my lifetime. I know that she knew the Lord and is now at home with Him.

I was shocked and very saddened to hear of Margaret's passing. Like Lynda in her comments, I enjoyed working with Margaret at HDR, and looking for her in the programs or in person at the symphonies. She was always so kind, smiling, and pleasant. I gave her a calendar one year I received featuring beautiful concert halls around the world showcasing their architecture, and I know she appreciated and was touched by that. My deepest sympathies to Margaret's family.

Our sympathy to Margaret´s family. She was our neighbor for these past several years. We have fond memories of Margaret playing her cello on her deck before our neighborhood Labor Day brunch. We´ll miss her talent and her friendly hellos. Marie and Art

I met Margaret years ago in school and thru activities at Presbyterian Church of the Cross. Her musical gift of playing the cello was mesmerizing and her smile lit up a room. God bless Margaret and may the memories provide her grieving family comfort and peace.

I will always cherish the hours we spent making music together. She was so supportive of me as a person, a musician and friend that there will be a whole in my life without her. I love her family and hope the know the depth of my sorrow. Blessings to them all. Cindy

Ms. Lim was my cello instructor when I was 13 or 14, and I'll always remember her kindness when I was scared while my mother was undergoing a mastectomy. "I can hear in your playing that something's wrong. Put down the bow and let's talk." That compassion has stayed with me for 35 years, and might be the biggest lesson from our time together. Sincere condolences to her family.

I have many fond memories of Margaret from the Burke High School orchestra, but they all meld into one: Margaret's eternally sunny disposition. She was a serious, but joyful musician. Dear Margaret, you will be missed.

I`m so sad to hear of Margaret`s passing. She was truly a delight and I thought so highly of her when she was working at HDR. I always looked for her when we attended concerts of the symphony. Peace be with you all.

Margaret was a member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals [IAAP] and was always smiling and volunteered on several committees. I missed seeing her in the Omaha Symphony Christmas Concert. I'm sure she is still playing beautiful music in heaven!
