Matthew Cunningham

Brother Matthew Cunningham, FSR, passed away peacefully on June 24. 2024, in Reno NV, his home since 1963.

Brother Matthew grew up in Council Bluffs, and attended St. Fancis Xavier school for 12 years. He then attended Creighton University and taught at St. Patrick grade school and Holy Family School in early 1960s. In 1963 he moved to Reno to join Brothers of the Holy Rosary. He professed f inal vows in 1964. His career vocation was in teaching, serving as principal or superintendent of NV Catholic schools until his final assignment as Chancellor of Reno Diocese for 19 years.

He is predeceased by his parents George D. And Lillie Cunningham; siblings, Isabelle O'Grady, George E. Cunningham, Anne Whitcomb and Margery Garcia; also by Brother Phillip Napalitano, of the Brothers of Holy Rosary.

Brother Matthew is survived by sisters, Sr. Georgita Cunningham, RSM, Kathleen Cunningham Mandina; and by Brother Edward Zuber, of the Brothers.

His funeral will be at St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral on Monday, July 1st, in Reno.

In lieu of flowers, Catholic Charities was a favorite charity.
