Richard Arends Obituary

ARENDS-Richard "Dick", 52, died at The Monarch, Lincoln on Saturday (11/11/06) after battling Merkel cell neuroendocrine cancer for five months. Dick became an inspiration to friends and family who read his weekly e-mail updates about the progress of his cancer treatments and views about life that were often humorous. Born, Omaha (1/15/54) to Raymond and Merlyn (Wittier) Arends of Talmage. Christened and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Talmage, he spent his young years participating in church and 4-H activities. Dick graduated from Nemaha Valley High School in Cook. During summers, Dick worked with harvesting crews following the wheat from Oklahoma to south
Dakoka. In 1977, Dick graduated from
the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a B.S. in mechanized agriculture. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity where he met his future wife, Deb, at a fraternity function in 1972. Deb (Urbanek) and Dick were married in 1974 in Ulysses at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Their beloved daughter, Kathleen Danielle, was born in Broken Bow in 1985. While in Broken Bow Dick was the district manager for Ralston Purina. He also enjoyed playing softball, hosting and participating in the annual Nebraska
one-box pheasant hunt and acting in the community playhouse. The Arends family moved to Lincoln in 1988 where Dick worked for Master Mix feeds and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture. At the time of his death, he was a field representative for the Midwest Messenger, a division of Lee Enterprises, Tekamah. He loved interacting with clients who soon became friends.
Dick volunteered with the couples Bible study group at Clinic With a Heart and served on the AGR, Kappa Chapter
Alumni Board as the property manager for 12 years. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Risen Christ. Dick was a loyal Husker fan, always seated on the 40-yard line. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, sharing the rewards of his hunting with friends and neighbors. He shot trap with his brother and friends. Dick took pride in being able to fix anything. On a remote Canadian fishing trip he once repaired a boat motor with a bumper sticker, bubble gum and duct tape. Dick will be greatly missed by family, friends, co-workers and neighbors.

Dear Deb & Kate,
We had not kept in touch very well through the years, but we saw Dick at the NC Classic in Kearney in 2005. He was the same fun guy that we remembered from the years of playing on the same softball team in Broken Bow. I was pitcher and Dick played 2nd base. We had a great team and lots of fun. Deb won the state "beef cook-off" while in Broken Bow, and shared her winning work with us at Weissert Grange.
What special people! Dick certainly went "before his time" and we are so sorry for your (and our) loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Arends Family,

Our thoughts and prayers go out to you during this time. Thank you Dave, for getting us acquainted with your brother, Dick. Although our time with him was limited, it didn't take long for us to know, he was a special person and truly wanted to help us enjoy our new pond by helping establish a wonderful wildlife habitat. We will certainly miss him, but know he is now resting peacefully.

Deb and "Kat": I just found a picture the other day of Christopher and "Katie" sitting on the porch swing of your house across the street from St. Joh's. What great times those were with lots of running back and forth across the street and down the alley to sample this or that from our kitchens. And then Dick handed over all those rakes for wine racks when he cleaned out the garage--without telling you--and you saw them hanging in the rectory kitchen. What fun we had being neighbors. Dick's passing took us by surprise because it's been some time since we visited in the kitchen of your Lincoln house. Do know our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

Deb and daughter, We are very saddeded to learn of Dick's illness and passing. Dick always had a smile, word of encouragement and bit of wit along with his knowledge when I walked back to his office. He was a friend to all and loved by many. It was a pleasure to know Dick and do business with him in the past few years. Our deepest sympathy.

Deb and daughter, George Bernard Shaw quoted Dick's outlook on life the best, "Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splended torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as blightly as possible before handing it on to future generations." Our deepest sympathy.

Deb and Kat,

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dick's warmth of personality and humor will be missed by many. His ability to strike up a conversation with anyone at anytime - displayed his gift of never knowing a stranger. I always admired that innate ability in Dick during our years of working together at NDA, and particularly during our endless hours in the booths at the Denver Stock Show.

All our best,
Chris and Kathy Buechle

Dick will be in our hearts and memories forever. What a neat guy! We'll always remember the "trip through the corn field" to get to a party, just because we missed the turnoff. He was always a guy looking for a fun time!
