Richard Proud Obituary

PROUD-Richard "Dick", age 87, Battlement Mesa, CO formerly of Omaha, passed away January 24, 2009 in Rifle, CO. Richard was born January 19, 1922 in Des Moines, IA, grew up and graduated high school in Arapahoe, NE. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and a law degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He was a Naval Second Lt during WWII and commanded the landing craft LCT912 in the Pacific theater. An attorney and lobbyist who worked for Mutual of Omaha for 20+ years, Richard was a prominent figure in Nebraska politics as a member of the Nebraska legislature for 10 years and speaker of the Legislature in 1973 and 74. Afterward he served as Deputy Director and General Counsel for the State of NE Department of Welfare and as assistant professor at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. During his retirement he authored two books.
Preceded in death by parents George and Florence (French). Survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jean; daughter Carol; son George; son and daughter-in-law John and Theresa; grandchildren Ian, Megan, Adam, Matthew, Rachel, Christian, Andrew and Kelsey.
A Memorial Service was Monday, January 26 at All Saints Episcopal Church, Battlement Mesa, CO. Future service and interment.

I worked with Dick in the Law Department at Mutual of Omaha and enjoyed him very much, and now his friend Carl Klekers is my attorney. Tom Selzle was my supervisor in the Law Department we all liked Dick so much and he was missed when he moved away but we never forgot him. May he rest in peace.
