Richard Reiner Obituary

Dr. Richard Kurt Reiner

October 21, 1953 - January 13, 2025

Dr. Richard Kurt Reiner died on Monday, January 13, 2025 at 71 years of age. Richard was born in Holdrege, NE on October 21, 1953 to Dr. Walter and Margaret (Borg) Reiner. He had three older siblings, Mary Ellen, Robert, and Margaret. Richard graduated from Holdrege Senior High in 1972. He attended Hastings College, graduating in 1976 with a bachelor of science degree in biology. He was accepted into medical school and graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1979. He then entered his residency in Family Practice at UNMC. Following his residency, he returned to Holdrege where he was a Primary Care Physician for 34 years at High Plains Family Medicine.

In 1977, he was united in marriage to Darlene Vontz and two children were born to this union, Stefanie and Scott Reiner.

On September 18, 1993, he was united in marriage to Lori Lynn Hobbs and welcomed her children, Alex & Melissa Hobbs into his heart. Together, they created a loving family for their four children.

Richard was a "behind the scenes" type of person. He quietly served the community in many ways. He purchased the swans for the North Park. He personally went door to door to solicit funding for the new middle school, and funding for renovations at the Legion Ball field. He was the man behind the music at legion baseball games, bringing in a new sound system for the venue. Richard loved fireworks, and he worked with the city and volunteer fire department to bring fireworks back for 4th of July in the 1990s. Above all else, Richard was steadfast in his love and devotion to his family, and the dedication he had for the patients in his medical practice.

Dr. Reiner was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Walter and Margaret Reiner; one grandson, Arlow Reiner; a sister, Margaret Ann Monk; father-in-law, Dr. Edgar Smith; brother-in-law, Dr. Charles Krobot; and one sister-in-law, Kimberly Bacon.

He is survived by his wife, Lori of Holdrege; children: Stefanie (Dan) Carlstedt of Omaha; Scott (Amber) Reiner of Eagle, ID; Alex (Erin) Hobbs of Overland Park, KS; and Dr. Melissa (Kyle) O'Neill of Anchorage, KY; grandchildren: Aubrey, Kailynn, Rylan, and Jaxon Carlstedt; Landon and Sydney Hobbs; Meadow Reiner; Murphy and Hollis O'Neill; his sister, Mary Ellen Krobot of Omaha; brother, Robert Reiner of Minneapolis, MN; sister and brother-in-law, Lisa (Dr. Jeff Strohmyer) of Papillion; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Ross Bacon (Dr. Leah Johnson) of Sioux Falls, SD; mother-in-law, Carol Smith of Omaha; and father-in-law, Dr. David (Phyllis) Bacon of Kearney.

There will be no visitation as the family has honored his request for cremation. A private family memorial and inurnment will take place at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Holdrege Volunteer Fire Department, Holdrege Public Library, or any charity of your choice.
