Sharon Redding Obituary

Sharon Ruth Redding PhD

October 18, 1946 - March 31, 2025

Dr Sharon Ruth Redding, nurse educator passed away March 31, 2025. She died as a result of complications from metastatic colon cancer. She was comforted by 2 long time nursing friends and her best friend as she peacefully passed into eternity.

Dr Redding was a remarkable woman. She was a graduate of UNMC's nursing class of 1968, won a masters degree from the University of Washington and her PhD in nursing from UNMC. She had a world wide practice starting in Chad with the Peace Core (she owned and rode a camel to work immunizing the villagers); she taught maternal child health in Brazil; she taught advanced nursing in Tobolsk, Siberia; she provided advanced maternity services in multiple African countries. She traveled all over the world including flying over the Himalayan mountains in a small plane and traveling all over Asia, always taking time to teach nursing skills at every opportunity. She taught nursing skills to decades of students both at College of Saint Mary's and UNMC and is considered one of the favorite professors in the colleges because of her global perspective and attention to diverse populations. In 2014 she volunteered with Project Hope and the World Health Organization to open a nursing college in Wuhan, China. She made multiple Chinese professional friends and colleagues and is revered at the college in Wuhan.

Dr Redding was a fierce friend and was ready to help anytime she was asked. She was fun, quick to laugh and make a joke. She will be missed. There will never be another Dr Sharon Redding. A light has gone out in the world.

Sharon was my very best friend since grade school, high school, two marriages, losing two daughters-she was always there for me. Her last visit to Florida to see us was just before she passed. I will miss her always

It is Easter-I was looking for you, to call me back, to answer my notes.
No easter card this time.
I can not accept the reality. I find out that you are gone. I am sad -You were a big part of my life from CSM, Bergan Hospital , visits in our home telling stories etc.
And now you are gone. I already miss you so much.
A piece of my heart is
Now a star in the sky.

It was an honor to know and work with Dr. Redding at College of Saint Mary. She touched many lives during her time. Her smile and love of people is what I'll remember most!

Sharon was a wonderful person. She and I were friends in grade school and high school and beyond. We were the Sins goose cheerleaders in Fall Frolics at Benson H.S. And had much fun in Girl Scouts and Job's Daughters with her sister, Donna and my sister,Kate. Yes, a light has gone out of the world.
