Deepest condolences to colleagues, friends and family by a former student of Dr. Kollmorgen's for all of one single semester, but with a lifetime impact.

At this late date I have learned of Professor Kollmorgen's death in 2008. I wish to say that my undergraduate years at the University of Kansas included an introductory course in political geography in about 1961. His lectures' clarity and incisiveness were striking and unusual -- leading me to reinforce my decision to study government and politics and to nearly change my major from political science to geography - a program at Kansas with a strong national reputation I only learned about later. I loved the classroom atmosphere he created - even for undergrads, I loved his conceptualism, avoiding detail unlikely to stick with undergrads but sure to serve as frameworks for later empirical observations. An approach I tried to model in my own undergrad classrooms over about 37 years. But most memorable - a saying I abide by to even this much different "newsday:" To wit - "The only newspaper worth reading is at least a week-old" as he produced a recently published NYT report on an issue relevant to that day's lecture. I'm sorry to hear about Walter's passing..I work at Gretna Community Living Center and he was a joy to work with..always tried to teach us something.
