Walter Piatkowski Obituary

Walter Piatkowski Jr., 80, born June 11, 1945 in Toledo, Ohio, passed away on August 18, 2025 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Stella Piatkowski; sisters JoAnne and Kathy; and his son, Sean.

Walter is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Susan Lynne (Swickard) Piatkowski; his sons, Dave (Marjorie), Eric (Kristin), Troy (Sarah) all of Omaha; and his grandchildren, Caleb (Hayden) and Hayley; Paige (Drew Ponton), Jace and Paisley; Paxon, Sutton and Ashlynn.

Walt often said that he had the "gift of gab" and could talk to anybody - a trait that served him well during his more than 30 year career in sales at International Paper Company. Before his professional career, he excelled on the basketball court. He was an All American at his alma mater, Bowling Green State University, where he is also a member of the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame. He went on to play in the ABA for the Denver Rockets, earning a spot on the ABA All Rookie Team. He was also offered the opportunity to try out for the 1968 U.S. Olympic Team, which he reluctantly declined due to his professional contract obligations.

Walt will be remembered for his warm personality, his gift of conversation, his work ethic, story telling, and the deep pride he took in his wife, children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Hospice House of Omaha. Family will be holding a private service. Condolences may be left at RoederMortuary.com.

Walt was a good friend to many people. I first met Walt when we were both watching our grandchildren play basketball. Then we talked many times at different ball games. It was always a joy and so refreshing to talk to Walt. Anytime I saw him, I would seek him out to have some more fun conversation. May God bless his soul and all his family. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. RIP Walt.
