Wayne was a good cop and an even better man.

He was a fine example to younger officers. Sad to learn of his passing

Betty did thank me so many times for saving Wayne as this suspect did plan to kill us both as no doubt being 25 yrs in cruiser up North I knew this and we were beat worst than any two cops ever on the job that lived to tell all till this day.My mind is fuzzy for dates of events from many years of fights. We were front page news for two days 0n 9/30and 10/1/84.I never wrote a book but I was involved in more events and two riots than most on the job ever were and still around to talk. about.Iknow that Wayne had problems from the beating he took and it did effect him later on in life as it has on me also. Wayne was a tall and quiet person whom loved life and family and is a shame he is not with us anymore. The life of a street cop is very hard and most do not live long after they retire and guess us left are lucky even if things are fuzzy..Wayne and myself were the start up of the Telephone Reporting Unit as were in side for many. The Unit took much of the load from the cruisers and the problems to start up were some but it did work and does till this day. We had two phones and long phone lines all over upstairs .Funny

My dad came on the department with Wayne and he passed away last November. There are so many of our old-time police officers in heaven, I'm sure they're patrolling the streets there, and enjoying each other's company. So sorry for your loss. You will all be in my prayers.

To the Saunders family; Wayne and I became officers on the Omaha Department on the same day, Dec., 16th, 1956. I only worked a few times with Wayne but found him to be very loyal and dependable.I never knew him to raise his voice or get upset.I know he will be sorely missed.

Wayne was the only cop I knew before joining the department myself. He had a gentle humor and a rock solid sense of integrity in a very challenging job. He gave so much of himself to serving and protecting the citizens of Omaha.
Betty, Ken, Brenda and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time. I hope you can be comforted by the solemn pride of being the family of such an exceptional man.
