Florence Hoch Obituary

CANASTOTA - Florence Marie "Flo" (Mason) Hoch, 83, of 3430 Route 31, Canastota, passed away quietly at her home on Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, surrounded by her family.
She was born on Sept. 23, 1927 in Canastota, the daughter of Charles and Julia (Kyser) Mason.
Florence lived in the Canastota area all of her life, attending the Canastota schools.
Florence and Harold owned and operated Flo's Diner on Route 31 in Canastota for more than 35 years, which became known as the "Home of the 10-cent Coffee." Florence worked at or ran many diners in the South Bay area of Canastota during her life. She enjoyed working at her table near the door, so she was able to talk or wave to her customers as they entered.
Florence also enjoyed flea markets and shopping.
She is survived by her husband, Harold L. "Harry" Hoch, whom she married on March 30, 1946, in South Bay.
Florence had three children, including two daughters, Deborah Hoch Congden, who passed away in 1997, and Susan and Russell Brown of Canastota, and one son, David and Debra Hoch of Canastota. Two sisters, Edna Clark of Virginia, and Betty and Walt Hojackni of Durhamville. Twelve grandchildren, Stanley Congden, III, Diana Congden, Thomas Congden, Kami Palmer, Katie Palmer, Connie Mackey Harding, Jodi Mackey Marsala, Jacob Smith, Cherie Smith, Tara Hoch Snyder, Zachary Hoch and Kaleena Hoch; 14 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. Florence was also predeceased by a brother, Charles Mason; and three sisters, Cora Royce, Audrey Seybold, and Annabelle Kilroy.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Canastota. Pastor Donna Chapman of the Whitelaw Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Whitelaw Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held on Thursday (tomorrow) from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home, 201 James St., Canastota. OMG! News travels fast to California too! I grew up eating at her restaurant! That place is a landmark for all in the local community! The 10 cent coffee always made me smile. The old fashion stools for breakfast, the fisherman and farmers coming in all dirty ready for their big breakfasts and hot cup of coffee's. My father had cancer and that was the one place he went to for compfort for homemade mashed potatoes. RIP Flo and may God watch over you and your family. Kelly Cornish/Santa Maria, Ca.
