Glen Hance Obituary

HUBBARDSVILLE>> Glen James Hance passed away on Monday, July 18, 2016 at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. after fighting a long illness.
Glen was born in Edwards, N.Y. on Oct. 22, 1925, the son of Glen and Jennie Barraford Hance. He was a 1943 graduate of Sherburne High School. Glen lived in the Sherburne – Hubbardsville area all his life.
Glen served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46 during World War II, on the U.S. Heed minesweeper. He served the East Hamilton United Methodist Church for decades as financial secretary, trustee, and usher. Glen was a fireman, fire commissioner, secretary, and treasurer of the Hubbardsville Fire District for many years. He was a member of the Sherburne and Madison American Legions and the National Association of Postmasters. Glen served the Snack site in Hamilton, and enjoyed traveling with the Oriska Valley Seniors.
In 1947 Glen purchased the Hubbardsville Country Store, operating it until 1977. He was appointed Postmaster in Hubbardsville in 1953, serving the 25 years until transferring to the Sherburne office in 1977, serving there until his retirement in 1986.
Glen married Carolyn McGregor on March 4, 1951. She predeceased him on Jan. 23, 2010. They were true partners, operating the Hubbardsville Store and raising their three children. After Glen's retirement, they spent many years traveling the United States, walking the roads of Hubbardsville, and enjoying their grandchildren.
Most important in Glen's life were his family, friends, and children. He had a wonderful attitude toward living, and made new friends wherever he went. Surviving Glen are his three children, Shayne and Norman Cowen, of Waterville, N.Y., Jill and Bruce Tynan, of Hackettstown, NJ., and Glen and Stephanie Hance, of Fredonia, Pa.; three grandchildren, Amy Myers and Vince DiCostanzo, of Philadelphia, Pa., Ryan Whipple, of Hackettstown, N.J., and Dillon Cowen, of Laguna Beach, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren, Mara Whipple, Emery Myers, and Jonathan Glen DiCostanzo. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Glen also leaves behind special friends Ken Burstein, Jane Loop, Wendy Morris, the Karns, the Ruschs, and his Tuesday morning breakfast club buddies. Glen was predeceased by a brother Everett, and sisters Jennie, Gloria, Gertrude, and Gwendolyn.
Glen's family would like to thank the entire Hubbardsville community for their love and support. A special thanks to Dr. Nelson and Dr. Carlson and their staffs, the Community Memorial Hospital staff, and to the fourth floor at Crouse for their care and compassion.
