Jane Bertrand Obituary

Jane Frier Joy Bertrand, 101, died on May 25, 2021 at Francis House in Syracuse. She was the second of four daughters born to Donald D. and C. Honora Frier of Oneida. A graduate of St. Patrick School and Oneida Junior and Senior High Schools, she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Cornell University in 1941. During World War II, she served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross, attached to the Navy, in the Southwest Pacific. She married Edward Neil Joy of Oneida in 1947. For many years they operated H.F. Joy Co., Inc., the family business since the early 1920s. While living in Oneida and raising their family, Jane was an active member of St. Patrick’s Church, their Altar and Rosary Society, and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the Mother’s Club at St. Patrick School and an avid bridge player, with a group of friends who spent many enjoyable evenings at cards and conversation. When Eddie died in 1986, Jane lost not just a husband, but also the literal “boy next door” she had loved for so many years. Jane married her second husband, John W. Bertrand, M.D. of Syracuse, in 1988. John’s first wife, Anita, had been Jane’s friend since the early ‘40s, and mutual condolences had turned to love after John and Jane had both lost their spouses. Sadly, John died in 1991, but his family had become Jane’s as well and were a beloved part of her later life. A vital part of organizing the Class of 1941 reunions at Cornell, she served as class treasurer until 2006. She remained close to dear friends both from Cornell and her Red Cross years, seeing them as often as their far-flung lives permitted. She also made lasting friends with many people after moving to Syracuse. A member first of St. Therese Church in Syracuse, she joined Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville upon moving to East Syracuse. She treasured memories of her trips to Ireland, England, France and Italy as well as the Caribbean and the Virgin Islands. She is survived by her children, Mary Beth (Bob) Blackmon of Troy; Susan Joy (Peter) Schaefer of West Sand Lake; and Tim Joy (Leslie Mulpagano) of Oneida; three grandchildren, Brenton Joy of Oneida; Alison Schaefer of Austin, Texas; and Kristen Schaefer of West Sand Lake; nieces Kathleen Donahue Schnicker of Massachusetts and Maureen Jane Bowers of Florida; nephews John G. Donahue of California and James D. Cutbush of Texas; three stepchildren, John (Mary Jo) Bertrand of Dewitt, Stephen (Patricia) Bertrand of Florida, and Barbara (Ray) Wassel of East Syracuse; and many great-nieces and -nephews, great-great-nieces and -nephews, step-grandchildren and step-greatgrandchildren. As well as her husbands, Jane was predeceased by her parents,Don and Nora, and her sisters, Elizabeth Adella Donahue, Cathryn Cutbush Watson, and Donna Marie Frier; and two nephews, Michael J. Donahue and Thomas E. Cutbush. While there will be no calling hours, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on June 19 at Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Salt Springs Road, Fayetteville. Masks and social distancing are required for as-yet-unvaccinated persons.
