Joseph Ostrander Obituary

ONEIDA - Joseph P. Ostrander, 52, of North Street, passed away on December 9, 2021, in Oneida Health, surrounded by his loving family, after a valiant battle with metastatic melanoma.Joe was born in Oneida on June 21, 1969 to Albert R. and Carol J. (Seabrook) Ostrander Sr. He grew up in Vernon Center, where he was a volunteer firefighter during high school. Joe was a graduate of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School, Class of 1987. Joe and Linda were united in marriage at St. Paul’s Methodist Church on May 19, 2001.Joe was currently employed by H. P. Hood in Oneida in the warehouse and was part of their safety team. He was also currently serving his second term as an elected official for the City of Oneida Supervisor for Wards 4, 5, and 6, and while with the Board of Supervisors served as Vice-Chairman of the Planning, Economic Development, Environmental and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, as well as a member of the Administration and Oversight Committee and the Criminal Justice, Public Safety, and Emergency Communications Committee. Joe was a Republican Committee Member for Madison County and the City of Oneida. Joe was also employed at the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., where he worked for almost fifteen years tending the door, assisting families and the funeral directors during services and making transfers. He was previously employed by Family Dollar as the Lead Parts Coordinator from 2008-2017 and was everyone’s favorite coffee server for several years at Dunkin Donuts in Oneida. Joe had also held positions with Cablevision and CSX Railroad where he was a certified Railroad Conductor by the Railroad Education and Development Institute.He was truly a busy and selfless man who gave of himself wherever he could and was passionate about his endeavors. Joe was a member of the Sconondoa-Sherrill Masonic Lodge #814 as a Third Degree Master Mason, working on his goal to become a Templer. He was very active with the Oneida Relay for Life since its inception in 2002 and on their planning committee. Joe’s teams were Builder’s for Hope and Hood’s Helping Hands.He was a volunteer for the CNY Memorial Stair Climb, Flags of Honor in Oneida, the Madison County Republican Committee, as well as a member of the Ghost Seekers of CNY. Joe was a volunteer for the Madison County Sheriff's Office and their Child Safe Identification Program and was currently revitalizing the H. P. Hood Community Outreach program. He was a diehard fan of the NY Giants and WWE. One of his favorite things to do was to vacation with his wife and family. Joe was a member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church.Surviving besides Joe’s loving wife Linda are: his son, Jeff (Kelly) Ostrander of New York Mills; daughters, Tracy (Parish) Sharlette and Jodie (Jason) Tiffin, all of Oneida; seven grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart, Alexandria, Adriana, Nathan, Derek, Camryn, Connor, and Cameron; his mother, Carol Ostrander of Vernon Center; one sister, Amy (David) Aversa of Clinton; four brothers, Albert (Linda) Ostrander Jr. of Georgia, Douglas Ostrander of Vernon Center, Donald Ostrander of Oklahoma and Christopher (Ellyn) Ostrander of Clay; sister-in-law, Sue (Larry) White of Durhamville; brother-in-law, Bud (Darlene) Dunn of Oneida, several nieces and nephews and his feline fur-babies, Todd and Margo, who were named from one of his favorite movies, Christmas Vacation. He was predeceased by his father, Albert and a brother-in-law, Bobby Dunn.On behalf of Joe’s family, we would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Vanderhoof and Dr. McKay, along with the compassionate nurses and staff of the 4th floor at Oneida Health. We would also like to thank the Roswell Oncology, Infusion, and Radiation Center staff, and Vernon Health Care Center. Thank you to family, friends, and our local community organizations for their generous donations throughout Joe’s courageous battle.Funeral services will be held 11AM, Saturday, December 18, 2021, from St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Sayles Street, Oneida, with Linda’s Uncle, Rev. Marvin Phillips, officiating. Interment will be made in Lenox Rural Cemetery. Friends may call at the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main Street, Oneida, on Friday, December 17, 2021 from 4 to 7PM.
