Nelson "Vern" VanPatten

1928 - 2014

ONEIDA >> Nelson "Vern" VanPatten, 86, of East Walnut Street, went to be with God, Saturday, July 12, 2014, with his loving family at his side.
He was born May 28, 1928, a son of Joel and Marion Snyder VanPatten, in Stockbridge, N.Y. On Aug. 24, 1972, he was united in marriage to Alice Theobald, in Cumberland, Md. He was a member of the Salvation Army. He served in the Armed Forces from 1948 to 1952, as a bandsman playing the French horn in the 84th Constable Band and also served in the National Guard. He was employed for several years with his father in the VanPatten Disposal Service. He was a professional welder for Concord Motor Homes, Oneida Heater, and retired from Oneida Molded Plastics in 1993.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; three children, Vicki and Josh Davis, Alison and Adil Elsheikh and Christopher "Bub" and Misty (Finster) VanPatten; eight grandchildren, that were his pride and joy, Grace and Sophia Davis, Ali, Alisha, Aiyah, and Aliyah Elsheikh, and Scarlet and Vincint Vernon VanPatten; four brothers, Walter and Barbara VanPatten of Merritt Island, Fla., John "Larry" and Linda VanPatten of Bradenton, Fla., William VanPatten of Oneida and Theodore VanPatten, of Pembroke, N.H.; three sisters, Susan and Marvin Hull, of Oneida, Sandra and Eric Lawrence, of Oneida, and Linda and Gary Wilson, of Fish Creek. He was predeceased by daughter, Debbie; sister, Polly Hilts, and two brothers, Joseph and Richard.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 16 at 2 p.m. from the Coolican-McSweeney Funeral Home, 322 Washington Ave., Oneida. Interment will be made in Stockbridge Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday from 12- 2 p.m., preceding the services.
