Barbara Duvall Obituary

Barbara Lee Saxon Duvall, age 84, of Greensboro, died on Monday, October 7, 2013, at Boswell Parker Health & Rehabilitation, in Greensboro.
Barbara was born in Greensboro on September 6, 1929, the only child of Jacob Asbury Saxon and Bernice Clayton Saxon. She was raised by her grandmother, Vallie Clayton, and graduated from Greensboro High School in 1946.
After high school, Barbara received a bachelor of arts degree when she graduated cum laude from North Georgia College, where she served on the debate team. She later studied some courses toward her master's degree at the University of Georgia.
On July 9, 1960, Barbara married William Lewis Duvall. She began her working career teaching in Chatsworth, then at schools in Atlanta, Summerville, and Union Point. She also taught at The Little Red Schoolhouse, in Siloam. In 1969 she became an original faculty member of Nathanael Greene Academy, where she also served on the board of trustees for a number of years. For a while, she also worked for the Greene County Department of Family & Children's Services, retiring in 1990.
Barbara was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro. At one time, she was the adult Sunday school teacher at New Hope Baptist Church. Reading, doing crossword puzzles, watching classic movies, and spoiling grandchildren were some of her favorite pastimes.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her son, William Lewis Duvall Jr., and stepmother, Viola Marchman Saxon.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Lewis Duvall, of Greensboro; daughter, Lee Duvall Thornton, and her husband, Ed, of Bogart; and grandsons, Clayton Edward Thornton, of Nashville, Tenn., and Ethan Lewis Thornton, of Bogart. She also leaves a host of other friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, at McCommons Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Hardy and Dr. Norman Waldrip officiating. Zippy Duvall, Charles Crumbley, Francis Rizner, Robbie Chapman, Bobby Dolvin, and Bobby Voyles will serve as pallbearers. The honorary pallbearers will be Carey Williams Jr., Tony Pace, Billy Duvall, Bear Findley, Grail Malcolm, and Tim Davison.
Flowers will be accepted but the family would appreciate that any memorials be made to Nathanael Greene Academy, P.O. Box 109, Siloam GA 30665; or the First Baptist Church of Greensboro, 203 S. Main Str., Greensboro, GA 30642.
