Gerald Mitton Obituary

Rev. Gerald Alexander Mitton, 87 of Jefferson, GA, went home to be with His Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Rev. Mitton is better known to most as "Preacher Mitton". He was born on September 17, 1927, in Wheaton Settlement near Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada to the late Frank and Miriam Mitton. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Jefferson, Georgia. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolyn Bagwell Mitton; his parents, Frank and Miriam Mitton; his brother, Vernon Mitton; his sister, Myrtle Mitton Seaman; two granddaughters, Holly Fouche and Tiffany Taylor; and a grandson, Alexander "Alex" Mitton. Preacher Mitton graduated from Tennessee Temple Bible College. He received an honorary Doctorate's Degree from the Florida Bible College. Preacher Mitton pastored his first church, Maple Springs Baptist Church in Dayton, Tennessee while attending Bible College. He came to be the Pastor of Faith Baptist Church of Jefferson, GA in January, 1961 until October, 2003. Preacher Mitton faithfully preached the Word of God and shared God's love with those he came in contact with on a daily basis.

He is survived by two daughters, Miriam Mitton Taylor and husband, Rev. Roger Taylor of Morgantown, KY; Susan Mitton Fouche and husband, David Fouche of Jefferson, GA; and a son, Gerald "Mark" Mitton and wife, Amy Lord Mitton of Jasper, GA; seven grandchildren: Carol Taylor; Tyler Mitton and wife, Ashley; Lindsay Mitton Rice and husband Caleb; Samuel and Doug Fouche, Adam and Amy Fouche, and five great-grandchildren: Damon, Myles, and Addyson Yarnell; Carson and Rush Mitton.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 2:00pm in the Faith Baptist Church in Jefferson with Rev. Pat Lawrence and Rev. Terry Wofford officiating. The body will lie in state from 1:30-2:00pm in the Church, prior to the service. The burial will follow in the Woodbine Cemetery in Jefferson and with the committal officiated by Dr. Bill Carpenter. Honored as pallbearers are Jimmy Benton, Walker Campbell, Derrell Crowe, Jake Murphy, Mike Nabors, Eric Shelton and Buck Tolbert. Serving as Honoroary Pallbearers will be Bill Carpenter, Keith Cudd, Dean Hamby, Ronnie Healan, Fred Kindheart, Jack Lawson, Jessie Mealor, Alex Moon and Kevin Page. The visitation will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 from 2:00pm until 7:00pm in the Faith Baptist Church, 2081 Highway 129 N, Jefferson, GA 30549.
