One of our citizens who made Athens such a distinctive place has left us! Herb Abroms never met a stranger. He was interested in everyone and always knew how to draw people out of themselves. I remember that Pat McGeehan seemed to have so many Herb Abroms quotes -- there was a quote for any situation. This larger than life Athenian will be missed by so many. When a person like Herb dies, it makes you think of all the laughter and good times and the fact that there are simply no real characters coming along that can measure up, no one with Herb's particular combination of friendliness and showmanship and savvy. What a great guy! A true original!

Dear Peggy,
My heart goes out to you and the girls.
Herb was such a character and will be greatly missed by many. I remember the good times I used to have when I was buying clothes from y'all. Y'all kept me dressed in the finest!!
I also have great memories at Herbie's!
When I run into you, it always lights up my day. You are in my heart and my prayers. Love you, Kitty Cobb Carroll

Peggy, I was saddened to hear of Herbie's death. He will never be replaced as his presence in all our lives, all who knew him, was immense. He was, by all appearances, the happiest man in the world. All of you were blessed to have him for his 75 years, even though I know you would have wished for more. The world is a better place because of people like Herbie, everyone's friend. I have read all the obituaries and they all knew Herbie as I did, as you could tell from their comments. That,in itself, is a fine tribute to a fine person. May he too be bound up in life eternal with his Creator as we say Shalom! Herbie!

Like many who will sign this book, I have spread the story of Herbie's far and wide in the 20 years since I left Athens, and it is universally met with "You're making that up?!". And, I always get to smile and say "No, I was there." Herbie's was a special place and time to so many of us and it could have only come from a special man. He'll be missed, but fondly remembered, which is all any of us can ask.

Peace be with you and your family.
