Joe Burton Linker III

Joe Linker Obituary

Joe Burton Linker, III died at his home in Athens, GA, on March 22, 2012. A man of enormous intellect and many talents and skills, he was born March 8, 1950 in Syracuse, NY, to Joe Burton Linker, Jr., and Mary Jane Auld Linker.

Dr. Linker grew up in Lynchburg, VA where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout by reinforcing and restoring an eroded embankment, was graduated Valedictorian from the Virginia Episcopal School, and was named Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

He completed a B.S. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University and earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia Medical School. An internship and residency followed at Brown University where he was chosen chief resident in internal medicine. He obtained a sub-specialty in allergy and immunology at Walter Reed Medical Center, and served as a physician with the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, NC.

Pursuing his interest in immunology, he completed a second sub-specialty in rheumatology and immunology at the University of New Mexico where he met his wife Kirsten Lundergan and began their family. Dr. Linker practiced medicine in Athens for 24 years.

He had a passion for the outdoors, was always up for a tennis game, and was a dedicated runner. He kept his car stocked with books, medical journals, CDs, exercise and hiking gear. He loved challenges from running the Pike's Peak Marathon or the Sandia Crossing to competing in tennis and bridge tournaments. Trying his ear at the Piano Puzzler on WUGA-FM complemented his great love of classical music and the many performances he enjoyed at Hodgson Hall on the UGA campus. He was a regular attendee at the big screen showings of the Metropolitan Operas on Saturday afternoons at Beechwood Cinema.

When he was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme he embraced his "expedited retirement" by listening to and studying his cherished classical music, voraciously reading, dining with friends, and reflecting on the wisdom shared with him by patients who struggle with debilitating illness. He was sustained daily by the prayers, notes, and love steadfastly sent his way by so many of his friends, colleagues, and patients.

In addition to his wife Kirsten Lundergan-Linker and his parents, Dr. Linker is survived by his son Hart, sister Jane Auld Linker (Terry O'Leary), aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A reception in his memory will be held Tuesday March 27, 2012 from 4:00pm until 7:00pm at the Day Chapel at the State Botanical Garden on Milledge Ave. in Athens. A private graveside service will be at a later date.

Rather than flowers please consider a donation in his memory to the Ark (640-A Barber Street Athens GA 30601 or the Athens Greenway (Athens Land Trust/Greenway Project 685 N. Pope St Athens, GA 30601).

Dear Kirsten and Hart,

Learning that Joe had passed was hard news to hear. Betty and I send you and Hart our love and sympathy. We will treasure our memories of times with you and Joe and hold you and Hart in our thoughts and prayers.

Athens was a brighter place with Joe in it. I know he will be sorely missed by all that knew him and by the Athens community. I was most fortunate to have known Joe and privileged to have called him my friend. I could not have found a better one. Even though time and distance had intervened in recent years I shall miss him.

Joe was my older brother, I have been so uplifted by all the amazing things both patients and fellow co-workers and fellow tennis, running, and hiking friends have shared with us at this trying time of his untimely death. He was a most loving and caring brother. He was always there as my medical consultant, as my brilliant brother, and as a dear thoughtful and caring brother. I will continue to care for his wife and son as I promised him when he told me that he had brain cancer 18 months ago. I will miss him dearly.

He was a great doctor for me personally, I can't imagine how I would have navigated rheumatoid arthritis all these years without him. He was an amazingly caring and kind doctor to my children. What a loss for his family and his patients.

Joe and I had many competitive tennis matches in tournaments, at Jennings Mill and at Athens County Club. I especially remember the late Sunday evening matches after he put his son, Hart, to bed. He was a very good tennis player and even a much better person and friend.

I knew Dr. Linker only as a patient, and I was always impressed with how much time he would spend explaining and educating me about diagnosis and treatment. Who can forget his jotting things and sketching explanations on note paper? One day, I guess I was his last patient that day, he walked me outside while we talked about our experiences with canoeing. He made the world a better place.

While Joe and I attended Virginia Episcopal School together, I really learned of his passion for life when playing singles tennis after college. Joe's passion for tennis was quite apparent--but his interest in music and theatre while attending med school particularly impressed me. I pray for Joe's family.

Joe and I were classmates at Virginia Episcopal School where he excelled in the classroom. He played all sports and was very good in tennis and track. My daughter went to UGA and became very ill during her freshman year and I called Joe and he saw her the same day.He treated her and greatly improved her overall health and followed up and calmed two very concerned parents. He is a friend that will be dearly missed.

I am saddened to hear of Joe's passing. I knew Joe as a fellow runner, one who was so dedicated to the sport. My husband held Joe in the highest regard as a fellow physician. What a tremendous loss for our community. Our prayers are with the family.

Our prayers and condolences are extended to the Linker Family. Joe B. Linker, MD was a friend and colleague for well over the past 20 years. He was admired and well respected amongst our Rheumatology community. Truly brilliant, well rounded and balanced regarding his family, work, beliefs, education , physical fitness and play. He told me that it was just necessary to slow down and enjoy life. It was well received . To the family we share your pride in Joe as well as in this incredible loss. Continue to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer.

March 24, 2012

Joe was a kind hearted soul. I only knew him on a medical basis but he radiated interest in knowledge. We talked music but I was unaware of his passion for the outdoors. In our Rheumatology community as well as his family, friends, and patients, Joe will be missed. Dan Appelrouth, MD, Rheumatologist

I was a patient of Dr. Linker for over 12 years, and during that time, he and I became great friends. I imparted to him my love of minerals and would often take him a speciman when visiting him. Over the years, he too learned to appreciate the wonders of minerals. He is irreplaceable to me and will be sorely missed. He was truely a great and wonderful friend and physician. He is not replaceable.

Joe had a wonderful intellectual curiosity and was always great fun to be with even when he was beating you at tennis.

March 24, 2012

Dr. Linker was an outstanding physician and will be sorely missed. Until his end, he was exercising on the trendmill in the gymnasium as he did before his "expidited retirement." May God comfort Kristen and Hart during their and our community's loss.

My condolence to the family of Dr. J. B. Linker.

I was his patient starting in the early 90's up until the day he had to leave his practice.

I always kept him in prayer after I found out he was in the hospial. May God continue to bless the family with strength and love.

Dr. J. B. Linker is only away in the flesh, he has touched so many patients in so many ways. RIP Dr. Linker.

I have known Dr. Linker from shortly after his arrival in the medical community. He was a fine and thorough diagnostician whose skills have been missed in the Athens medical community from our first awareness of his illness. He not only helped me with patients I referred but was essential in the diagnosis and treatment of my beloved sister-in-law with her autoimmune illness. My wife Dona and I share a deep sense of loss in his passing. Our deepest sympathies are with Kirsten and Hart in this period of sorrow.
