Melynda Reid Obituary

Tallahassee, Fla. - Melynda Claire Flatt Reid, 58, died July 8, 2010 in Tallahassee, Fla. She was the wife of Edward Reid. After being born in Knoxville, Tenn. to William P. "Bill" Flatt and the late June Nesbitt Flatt, she attended The University of Georgia and Eckerd College as an honors student.
In addition to her husband of almost 38 years and her father, she is survived by a sister, Katherine Flatt Hutto of Suwanee; a niece, Abbie (David) Smith; and a nephew William Hutto. She also was blessed to have two sisters-in-law, Jean Reid of Gainesville, Fla. and Nann (Mike) Bell of Manistee, Mich.
Melynda was a talented artist who generously shared her work. In addition to art she was passionate about protecting the flowers, pets and natural habitats she loved. She worked to protect the wildflowers that she drew in the Apalachicola National Forest and her nearby communities. She served for two years as President of the Leon County Food Cooperative (now New Leaf Market). She was a kind and gentle soul who treated everyone she met with respect and gentleness. Her sweet and giving earthly spirit will be missed.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on July 13 at the St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 2198 N. Meridian Rd., Tallahassee, FL.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to one of Melynda's favorite charities: The UGA Foundation for the "Nannie" Nesbitt/ Flatt fund sent to Office of Development, 224 Dawson Hall, UGA, Athens, GA 30602; Second Harvest of the Big Bend, 110 Four Points Way, Tallahassee, FL 32305; or Wee Read (United Way), One Huntington Road, Suite 805, Athens, GA 30606.

Dr Flatt, Kathy, and family I don't know, I just learned of your loss from my family in Athens. I am so sorry for your loss. I have many great memories of growing up across Broomsedge Trail from her and visiting your home frequently in our high school and college years to play the latest hit albums. Although we grew up and each left Athens behind I think of you all, and Melynda in particular, every time I pass your home when I'm back in town to visit my parents. God Bless you in this time and give you peace.

Edward, our love and thoughts are with you as they have been since Melynda became ill. I'm so glad I was able to spend a little time with her at Hospice House before she passed. I will always cherish the many cards with her artwork that she sent me over the years.

Dear Bill, my sincere condolences for the passing of your daughter. I did not have the pleasure of knowing her, but since the genes came from two great persons, I have no doubt that she was an outstanding individual. Gilles

Melynda was always an inspiration to others, and an unwavering source of creativity and support for causes and people she believed in. Knowing and working closely with her for just 2 years some 26 years ago before moving to Atlanta, she is someone I have always thought about, and long wondered how she was doing. I am so sorrowed to hear of her passing, and my sincere condolences go out to her family and friends.

I was very suprised to hear about Melynda's death. I have not seen or heard from her in about 30 years, but she was a part of a time that was very important for me. It was a time of which I'm certain we had many happy memories in common. We were both once a part of a group of people that called themselves Asylum Theatre, an association which, I'm sure, has always been a source of pride for both of us as well as those few others who claim it.
