I am so sorry to learn of Randy's death. Looking at his old photos on FaceBook and of old Pylon pix bring back such good/crazy memories. I knew him, but unfortunately never really had the opportunity to sit and talk with him and "get to know him." He was a definite part of my life in 1979-80. I am sad to know he's no longer here - he was too young to go. My sympathy to his family and to Michael, Vanessa, and Curtis.

Listening to "Dub" right now, this priceless, discordant, blessedly stripped-down rock music that no one outside of college stations and community radio would play back in the day. Fortunately I found that copy of "Crazy" (even with the wobbly pressing of "M-Train" on the B, which actually sounds even cooler) at my local record store....but I still kick myself for never getting to see Pylon play Tampa. Randy: I hope you and fellow Athenian Ricky Wilson are rocking out up there in Heaven. You will be missed down here.

Robin,
I am so saddened by the news of Randy's death. I learned of it tonight on facebook--an old PPP picture was posted and that led to comments which led to me figuring out they were talking about your Randy. I have such fond memories of all of you and the boys (all grown now, I imagine). I am so sorry for your loss. Many, many hugs.

I met Randy when my band was able to open for Pylon in Orlando in 1990. It was my ultimate dream as a musician to play a show with them after seeing them many times in the early 80's while at Emory. They were all excited when I brought my Italian pressing of "Gyrate" for them to sign! I will cherish it always. Randy was a big inspiration to my guitar playing and I wish all of his family and friends my deepest condolences.

Robin, Blair, and Adam - you are in my thoughts and prayers. I was in Athens in January and almost stopped by to see you, but ran out of time.... I'm so sorry I missed the chance then. I appreciate all that Randy and the rest of you did over the years for Brian and me. I have never had the kind of community people like you provided since I left Athens - now almost 10 years ago.

Randy was my cousin and although I did not get to spend a lot of time with him, I grew up in Kentucky, when we did I want to think it was quality time.
As I was reading the other comments I was amaized at how far reaching his life has touched so many and the imprint he has left on them and the world. It seems as if the Hampton's have had that honor.
I am sorry I could not be there with the rest of the cousins in this time of greif but I will remember the visit I had in July 2008 and cherish it.
To the family: know our thoughts and prayers are with you. We love you.

So many memories are swirling around me, freshman year at UGA with Randy and other friends. All the crazy things we did BEFORE the Pylon days and the fun times during and after them. Randy was a wonderful friend and an outstanding person. Except for maybe when he introduced me to disco....I've never known if I should have thanked him or cursed him for it. Robin, all my best wishes for this difficult time and boys....never doubt how much your father loved you.

They were always called minimalists but Pylon got such a massive sound out of three instruments and one voice they tossed that label aside like so much confetti. Call them art rock and they would turn their spooky, mysterious songs into a sweat-drenched dance party. They understood pogoing was better than moshing, and that gift made their shows cause for celebration. I'll always be grateful to Randy, Michael, Curtis and Vanessa for the sheer joy they generated. May Randy's family take comfort in knowing the mark he made.

Robin, Adam and Blair - I am saddened by Randy's death. I met him only once - my great loss - when he was helping my cousin move across the street from me, We had coffee and blueberry muffins in my home. Randy was my cousin. When he was a baby in Sarasota, FL, I used to babysit him. He grew to be a fine man and was a talented teacher, artist and musician. He was mild-mannered, unassuming, genuine and loved by all who knew him. Although I never saw him play with Pylon, I know Randy and the band were highly regarded in music circles throughout the country. His tragic death was recognized in The Atlanta Journal, Billboard, Village Voice, NPR and many other media. The last time I saw Randy was at a family reunion in Athens in July 2008. I have fond memories of that occasion and will always remember his smile and sense of humor. To his mother, Nancy, Robin, Adam and Blair, I share your loss and send sincere condolences.

My heart feels as heavy as the gray skies in the Classic City tonight. I extend heartfelt sympathy to the entire Bewley family---mother-Nancy, Robin, Adam, Blair, and Randy's extended, close knit musical family. Randy's love for both families was most evident----both in word and deed.
It was indeed a genuine pleasure to know Randy professionally as a master art teacher. We taught together at Gaines Elementary School for a number of years. My fourth grade students did so look forward to art day. Frequently their teacher came by early especially when she knew that Randy was combining music with his art lesson. We became and remained both professional and personal friends over a span of seventeen years.
How very fortunate I am to have known this multifaceted, gentle, compassionate, funny man--Randy Bewley. My motto is to take the best of life lessons a person has given you to incorporate and use in your own life.
Most assuredly the musical flag is at half mast with the untimely passing of my friend, Randy.

Randy and I first met as associates at Upton's department Store. I had no idea that we had a rock star in our mist until a book came out about the Athens music scene. Every UGA student who worked at the store wanted his autograph on their copy of that book.
I knew Randy as a very hard worker who had the driest most hilarious sense of humor. Anytime that he saw me he always spoke. He was just the nicest person that you will ever meet. My friends and I who knew Randy are heartbroken over his passing. The world has lost one of the good guys.

I am saddened by Randy's passing. He was talented and successful but was always remained very kind. I knew Randy through his younger brother, he did not mind dragging us all around Atlanta to go skateboarding.
After not having seen Randy for many years, I ran into him at a club in Athens where he made a point of coming over just to say hello. Even with his success he remained a warm and kind hearted person.
My condolences go out to all of those who will miss him.

I did not personally know Mr. Bewley nor am I familiar with his music (I will find more about his music today because I like all forms of music). However, I did want to leave the family with a message of hope. One scripture I have always found comforting is Isaiah 25:8,9. In a future time it says that: "He will actually swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord, Jehovah will certainly wipe the tears from all faces; Look! this is our God. We have hoped in him and he will save us."

Moving to Athens from a small town in the North Georgia mountains, Pylon showed me, from the very first night I saw them in 1979 at Memorial Hall, that the world was a far wider place than I had thought it was while growing up. I had never heard music that was at all like theirs. My ears opened up, and my horizons expanded. I saw them so many times -- in Athens, in Atlanta, in New York. Every time, they challenged me. And every time, they made me dance.
Rest in peace, Randy.

Whenever I saw Randy and Robin working with kids at the church, I thought, "How cool is this town Athens, where a 'rock star' volunteers to help nurture the youngsters at the downtown Episcopal church?" The answer would be: very cool. Randy is just the sort of guy that makes our city such a great place to live. His death is another sort of reminder for me. At times, after exchanging pleasantries with Randy, I told myself that I must get to know this person better, because I could tell there was so much going on with him. He was a thinker, an artist, very much his own man -- and he radiated kindness. Now, I can't have my longer conversation with Randy, and I'll be the poorer for that. Still, I am glad I did know this fine man and good citizen of Athens. Kammy and I send condolences to the many who loved Randy.

A piece of my heart has always been in Athens, having watched, played, laughed, swayed, bought and spun records, drank, and danced there on and off in different guises...but always as a friend...since the early 1980s. It's where I found that Essence Rare.
A piece of my heart is now broken, and the rest of it is heavy.

During my time in Athens, I saw Pylon, . . . well . . . many more times than I can guess. Their live shows were the soundtrack for some of the best evenings I experienced way back then. Pylon always wrote slowly; they were perfectionists in that way, and it showed with every release. I remember counting down the days until the "Beep/M Train" single arrived at Wuxtry.
All four of them were (and are still I would imagine) the nicest and humble folks. They loved their fans very much. I hope that Randy and the rest understand just how much their work continues to mean to all of us lucky enough to hear it.
