William Neighbors Obituary

William Alexander Neighbors, 71, of Lilburn, died Wednesday, April 17.

A native of Athens, Mr. Neighbors was born on July 9, 1947, the son of Dr. Joseph Britton Neighbors, Jr. and Mary Cobb Erwin Neighbors. Alex attended Barrow School, was a Little Leaguer and was one of Kelley’s boys at Athens Y. He was a 1965 graduate of Athens High School. Alex was a fine athlete, excelling in baseball. He graduated from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

On March 14, 1970 he and Jacquolyn Wing were married, and the devoted couple recently celebrated their 49th anniversary. Mr. Neighbors is survived by his wife; a daughter, Kathryn Wing Neighbors; and a son, William Alexander Neighbors, Jr., his wife Denise; and two adored grandchildren, Luke Anthony and Lucy Emerson Neighbors. He is also survived by two older brothers; Joseph Britton Neighbors III and his wife, Lois, and Andrew Erwin Neighbors and his wife, Gay.

Mr. Neighbors had a long and successful career with Ivey, with Lend Lease and with Paccar Financial, commercial vehicle leasing companies, in Athens, Columbus, Ohio and Atlanta. He was respected for his business acumen as well as for his generous nature, gregarious spirit and hearty sense of humor. He was all through his life a rabid supporter of his Georgia Bulldogs. Among his favorite places on earth was “Wrong Lot,” the old Neighbors house in the North Georgia Mountains on Lake Burton. A wonderful, easy host, Alex was always happiest surrounded by his family and many friends who treasured his good-heartedness.

Mr. Neighbors was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.

Services will be at Bernstein Funeral Home of Athens on Saturday, April 20. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, with a service in the chapel immediately following.

Alex was the poster child for the all around good guy. From the days of Little League, through high school ( even though I was a year behind in the Class of 66) He always made me feel comfortable with his easy going lighthearted attitude. I had only seen him occasionally over the years, but he was always the same guy. Good to the core. I will be praying for you and your family.

Alex always took the time to answer my many questions as a young buck at PACCAR Financial. I have always been grateful to him for that because Im sure he had more important things to get to but it never showed. Will miss his office visits. Thoughts and prayers to your family for the loss of a DGD.

I am so sad about this news. Alex was a great friend and colleague. We worked together for several years at PACCAR Financial.I will always remember that smile and his laughter. Go Dogs as he would always say. We will miss you dearly Alex. He was just in our office 3 weeks ago to play the lottery. Hard to believe he is no longer with you. Rest in peace my friend. I will miss you.
