GARY HEIL Obituary

Heil, Gary Dean, age 59, passed away unexpectedly on October 18, 2011. Gary was born on June 15, 1952 in Fullerton, CA. A lifelong resident of Orange County, Gary graduated from Anaheim High School, class of 1970. He attended Fullerton College before serving in the U. S. Army as a Military Policeman from 1972 to 1974. Gary received his B.S. in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona and worked for a short while in that field. He was soon drawn into Demolition Contracting business and worked for other companies before starting his own business, G. D. Heil, Inc., in 1992. Gary was well known in Southern California Construction Industry for his strong work and business ethics, as well as his positive attitude and professionalism.

On March 22, 1975 he married the love of his life, Laura Lee (Hood) Heil, and together they raised a wonderful family of three daughters, Dana Marisa Heil, Courtney Leigh McKeen, and Allison Nicole Martin. Gary was always a very supportive husband and father, participating in Laura's volunteer endeavors and encouraging his daughters in school, athletics and work. He embraced his two sons in law, Josh Martin and Myrran McKeen, when they joined the family and was totally overjoyed with his three grandchildren, Autumn Page Heil Carr, Cooper Lawrence Martin and Heiley Ray McKeen.

Gary was also an outstanding brother and friend to his sister, Peggy Heil Karcher, and a loving brother-in-law to Laura's sister, Kathi Short. He was a much loved uncle to each and every one of his many nieces and nephews, Kimberly (Christopher) Fox, Stacy (Mario) Borroto, Daryl (Ayumi) Hood, Kelly (Brian) Thatcher, Richard (Laura) Hood, Kilene Short, Elizabeth Karcher, Brian Short, Jessica Karcher, Carl J. Karcher and Betsy Short. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Karl E. and Yvonne Heil; parents-in-law, Bobbie E. and Lela Hood; and his brother-in-law, Bobbie E. Hood, Jr.

Gary loved to see the world. After graduating from high school, he and his buddy Alan drove around the U.S. for several months and the next year, he and his friends, Brian and Denny hitch-hiked for three months around Europe. Gary and Laura enjoyed many trips together, often marking special birthdays or anniversaries. He loved seeing England, Italy, France, Scotland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Tahiti, Greece, Turkey, Sicily, Hawaii and especially Egypt. Gary loved taking his family to Lake Tahoe for summer fun and winter skiing. He also pursued athletic endeavors by conquering Mt. Whitney with his friend Mark, enjoyed riding a street bike and working out with his personal trainer.

Gary loved the outdoors, especially enjoying trips to Yosemite. He recreated his own "Happy Heil Isle" in his backyard with a beautiful granite waterfall and fishing cabin for his grandchildren. He spent lots of his time working in his yard, enjoying every minute of it. Besides traveling, Gary always liked to have a good time. He and Laura opened their home on countless occasions for family and friends with family dinners and special event gatherings. Gary was a terrific host, making sure everyone was happy and entertained. He was an enthusiastic chef, trying new recipes on the BBQ and in the kitchen. Everyone loved his passion for food.

Gary touched many people throughout his life and will be well remembered as an outstanding friend, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle to all who knew him. We love you and will never forget you.

A Memorial Tribute will be held on Friday, October 28 at the Doubletree Hotel, 100 The City Drive, Orange, CA beginning at 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Assistance League of Orange, 124 S. Orange St., Orange, CA 92866. Hilgenfeld Mortuary

Laura, Girls and Family,
We have never in our lives experienced such an incredible tribute to anyone. We sat there looking around at this sea of people and could not believe someone could have touched sooooo many people. Seeing all the smiles, you could tell everyone was very proud to one of those people, one of the "Heil Family". We love you all...The Greene's

Although years have passed since I last saw Gary, the news of his death brought back many happy memories of this man, his wife & children and our mutual friends.
As a boy I lived on the same street as Gary. Then years later I reconnected with Gary & Laura as part of a group of families living close by in Anaheim raising our children together.
Those happy memories include Christmas Dinner with Gary & Laura at their home and camping trips with the guys (Gary, Don, Lou, Gordy, Doug and others).
Gary was a person that made friends with everyone he met.
My sincere condolences go to Laura and his family.

It's been over a week and I am still trying to figure it out. I will deeply miss my great friend. I will miss his smile, his caring friendship. I will miss our golf outings, and guy's get-aways. I truly do not possess the words to offer Laura and the family. What I can say is that he was a great friend that many of us truly enjoyed hanging around with. May GOD provide the comfort to all of his loved ones, especially Laura.

My family, the Pebley's, grew up next door to Gary and Peggy Heil. What fond memories we all have of going over to their house to play, swiming in their back yard and just all the great wonderful street parties we had during the 4th of July and other holidays. Although I had not seen Gary for many years since I now live in No. CA, he took the time from his busy schedule to come to our father's 2008 memorial service in Corona. I am so glad that we got to see him then and just want to say what a special person he was. I know he touched many lives and it is a tradegy that he is gone so early. May you find some comfort in your wonderful memories of him with your family. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am in shock and disbelief as I write this. I met Gary 13 years ago when he hired me to work for him. I never worked for anyone like Gary Heil. Let's just say that there aren't too many bosses like him. It is because of Gary that I am able to earn a living today. I felt he was a mentor and he was the guy that other guys want to be like. When things weren't going well, he was the first to look at things positively and tell us to keep plugging along. I'll never forget the ski trips and the many, many generous things that he and Laura have done for me and my family. Gary had a HUGE impact on my life, I only wish he had known how much. Every day I go to work and make a living at demolition; I owe a lot to Gary. Gary Dean Heil (Boss). RIP

It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with Gary. His interest in technology and “the latest thing” sparked many lively and stimulating conversations.

Gary was more a friend than a client. He made me feel part of the family as did his daughters Dana, Courtney and Allison.

The loss I feel at his passing is immeasurable. I trust that time and all the good memories will eventually heal the hearts of all that knew and loved him.

We are so deeply and sincerely sorry about your tragic loss. Although we only met Gary a time or two, we see his bright, smart, kind, and loving spirt through his beautiful daughter Courtney. Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss…our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

I'd like to share a poem we were introduced to after my sister passed away in July:

"When I left this world without you, I know it made you blue.
Your tears fell so freely, I watched; I know this is true.
While you were weeping, Days after I passed away-
While all was silent within me, I saw you kneel to pray;
From this wonderful place called heaven;
Where all my pain is gone, I send a gentle breeze to whisper,
"My loved ones, please go on"

Please know we are here for you all if there is anything we can do help bear your pain.

"When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure."

Much love to you all,
Michelle & Steve Dias

This news has rocked me. Memories of Gary and Laura have flooded my memory for days. Gary was a good friend to me; always patient with my non-stop nonsense. He convinced his Dad to let Denny Hillsabeck & I rent his grandmothers house... I believe it was the house his Dad grew up in. We nearly burned the place down one night by placing a rug over the floor furnace. It's one of the few times I actually made Gary mad at me. I loved him. Everyone did. And Laura, you know how much I sincerely love you. I am praying for you and the rest of your family. May you sense God's presence and His comfort at this time like never before. He is the God of all comfort and the Father of all mercies; He is a refuge in the storm... a very present help in times of trouble or need.

Gary, we became side by side neighbors 24 years ago. Those 24 years were filled with laughter, impromptu gatherings and the best of times especially while raising our children together. It did not take long to become family and share some of the most important times of our lives. We loved your infectious smile, kind heart, enthusiastic spirit and held dear the special times we shared almost every day for 13 years.

Even though we moved a short distance away, we continued our special friendship. You were the best to our boys and especially kind and generous offering words of wisdom and instilled the confidence that helped them grow into the men they are today.

You are a rare gift and we cherish the memories that will live in our hearts forever.

Our prayers and friendship will continue to help your family through this difficult time. With love and prayers.

Tragic loss of a wonderful, life filled man. A man among men. Entrepreneur, business man, contributor to many people's lives. You weren't a 1/2 bad golfer either. Gary Heil, founder of GD Heil Demolition, HiCycle Concrete Cutting, and a couple other businesses … is gone. Lee Iaccoca asked, "Where have all the leaders gone?" Here's one we lost. I will never forget this man.

I counseled you to NOT go into the construction industry back in the early '90s. Your passion was refreshing. It painted a picture of vision, hope, belief, and heart. The color you painted with was possibility and the end product was always intentional and achievable. I never saw you get in your own way. Your way of being, in building companies, family, and supporting others gave possibility reachable horizons for all who could see you.

Your confidence inspired others because you lead from a place of acceptance. Your sense of humor kept you real and approachable, never taking yourself too seriously. At times, I think your own success surprised you most. How you never allowed ego to get in the way of communicating compassionately and simply to everybody defines for me what the expression "do it in a good way" means.

You were building a fabulous company. You created jobs for people who could see the vision and then valued and supported them to achieve their dreams. It is my hope that what you started has a legacy. Thank you for being a friend to many, and my friend. Authentic, honest, and open ... AHO. One of the guys. Love you Gary and so long.
