John Raymond Gabay III obituary, San Clemente, CA

John Gabay Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce that on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, John Raymond Gabay III, a beloved father, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away. He was 67. Born to his father John and mother LaVerne and raised in Countryside, Illinois, John hitchhiked out to California in his early 20s and soon after found his home and calling in San Clemente. He ran the Beachcomber Motel, a one-of-a-kind historical seaside property, with his life-long friend and mother of his children, Karen, for 32 years before opening the Oceanfront Hacienda in 2013. John put passion and creativity into every one of his countless projects. Whether it was creating the quirky charm of his gorgeous beachfront vacation rentals, dreaming up the character and serenity of his vacation home in Rosarito, Mexico, painting buildings with his painting business, or building the nearly three-story tall wooden candy canes and a fresh pine wreath with his sons that became holiday season staples in the Pier Bowl, he was inspired by the desire to make things beautiful. It was deeply important to John to make sure everyone around him was taken care of and having a good time. For years he and Karen put on one of the best Fourth of July parties in town, opening their home to hundreds of family, friends, and locals. Every Christmas Eve when his children were young, John dressed up as Santa Claus and the adults in the room enjoyed "Santa's" visit just as much as the kids did. He had a presence and an energy that were big, authentic, and totally unique and if he was around you knew it because chances are he was making you smile. John found true joy in taking deep-sea fishing trips in Cabo San Lucas, watching sports (especially the Lakers), and attending concerts. He embraced adventure and tradition and for decades took his family on annual vacations to some of his favorite places: Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Big Bear, Mammoth, Chicago, and Mexico were graced by many years of the Gabay's visits. John is survived by his children, Shelly, John, Kevin, and Trever, and his sister Jannet and brother Michael. He will be remembered for his huge infectious smile, generosity, thoughtfulness, and warmth. As we look out at the waves of the ocean crashing onto the shore and the vibrant colors of the sunset painting the sky, we will feel his spirit. He is forever in our hearts. Please join us on Saturday, October 8th for an afternoon at the beach to celebrate John's illustrious life. Come by anytime between 3 pm and sunset; we'll be just south of the San Clemente Pier and look forward to hearing your most cherished memories and stories about John. A private service for close family will be held at a later date.

Thank you John and Karen for so many glorious seaside vacations. Thank you for trusting the sombrero room to our family! Thank you for the peace and quiet. Thank you for the ocean waves lulling us to naps and very long sleeps! No matter how stressful our jobs or even our retirements, the best rest I experienced was in your rooms. I´m so very sad to hear that
John left us, but we all know his memory never will.
With love and consolation,Delia and family

Although I hadn't seen John in decades, I remember him from my early teenage years, hanging out with my best friend, Karen. It did not surprise me at all that Karen and John eventually got together or that they had a long and beautiful partnership.
My love and thoughts go out to Karen and her family. Remember that grief is simply an outpouring of all the love. John is still with you just in another way.

John wasn´t just someone we rented from! He became a friend and part of our family once we started staying at the Hacienda in the Bonita 2018. He would always meet us when we got there, sit out on the balcony with us, share family stories , eat dinner with us and have a few drinks! Such a great person, even stayed in touch when we weren´t there, through phone calls and/or text messages. My husband and I were so shocked to hear of his passing! We will be visiting in a few weeks and vacation won´t be the same without him. So sorry we can´t make the memorial services, but will be there soon. Rest In Peace John! We know you will be there in spirit with us in a few weeks

i am so sorry for your loss. John and the family were part of our lives since my children were 3. Every year for 21+ years. We celebrated holidays the summers ,fall and lightning strikes together. We have great memories of times spent together each year . We considered the Gabays family. Several times a year we spent time at the Beachcomber. Our kids grew up together over the years.
John always Welcomed us with hugs and joyous love of life. Always busy making sure everything was the best for all their guests. John was so kind so caring and a great story teller. i think of his white van & then his red mercedes. i am sending you

Sending love to the Gabay family. Many great memories. John became a friend to our family about 40 years before I was born. I've known John my entire life. All of my formative holiday memories involve the Beachcomber and the Gabay family. Come to find out, I didn't only know John as a family friend... He was also known as Santa! And the Easter Bunny! I will remember John with a cigar in hand, a not quite fully buttoned Hawaiian-esque shirt, and grilling something up for the fourth! You would think he was a true Californian until you heard the Chicago accent that seemed to come through. Again, sending my love to Karen and the gang. Miss and love you all.

When we first moved to California, we stayed at the beachcomber. My mother and stepdad David Slama
got married at the beachcomber. We were lucky to get to John and his family.

I so badly wish we could be there to honor John´s life and the family and friends he loved. He was such a big part of Aunt Lorraine and the Chapman family´s life and they in his. So much history from 3rd grade Sweet home Chicago to beautiful San Clemente.
John was such a gracious Beachcomber host when we visited. Love to you Karen and kids

John was a great guy. The Fourth of July parties at the Beachcomber were epic events with two bands, good food and good friends. I was fortunate enough to play saxophone at many of those parties. Condolences and prayers for the family.

My fondest memories from growing up in San Clemente were down at the Beachcomber where I always felt welcome. My sincere condolences to the Gabay family and to one of my best friends Kevin. Remember the good times and love to you all!
