Hyman Evans Obituary

Evans, Hyman 93 May 26, 1918 Nov. 14, 2011 Hyman Evans died of natural causes at the age of 93. Son of Harry and Lena Evans, Hy grew up on the South Side of Chicago where he attended the school of hard knocks. He enlisted in the Army shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor and he spent the next five years of his life serving his country in the Pacific Theater. Ultimately, he was assigned to the Signal Corp as a staff sergeant attached to General MacArthur's GHQ. He was preparing for the invasion of Japan when the devastating new bombs ended the war. After the war, Hy married his true love, Lilly Siegel, and the couple settled in Portland to raise their large family. For most of his long career in the furniture business he managed Cohn Brothers, a large Portland store. Hy enjoyed a good game of golf and bridge. He was an avid Blazers and Oregon Ducks fan and earlier enjoyed taking his children to watch the Portland Buckaroos. Hy is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lilly; and his five children, Roberta Schmalz, and Larry, Mark, Steve, and Mike Evans; daughters-in-law Carrie, Jennifer, and Linda Evans; son-in-law, Dennis Schmalz; as well as grandchildren, Teresa Vilas, Audrey Schmalz, and Danny Schmalz, and Justin, Krista, Nolan, Maryl, and Riley Evans; and great-grandchildren, Corrie, Kacie, and Amanda. He is also survived by his sisters, Faye Libet and Shirley Tabachnick; and his brother, Boris Evans. Hy and Lilly also enjoyed a special friendship of over 50 years with Lee and Frank Berne. Hy's favorite charity was the one he lived day after day, his hand and heart extended in love; his ears always ready to listen to the concerns of others and offer sage advice if requested (and even when not). Though his name may not appear on a building, and no physical monuments or statues of him or to him are found, his family and friends will always cherish their years with a man who fully embodied the virtues of the greatest generation. A memorial service will be held at the Sharrie Torah Cemetery on Nov. 17, 2011 at 1 p.m. with arrangements by Holman's Funeral Service.

We so admired Hy. He was his own man. He called it as he saw it. He left his mark on life. All of us are better human beings for having been blessed to spend some of our years with him as a friend and neighbor.
Our deepest sympathies to his family, who he was so justly proud of.

I want to extend my condolences to all the family.

For over 25 years I called on and worked with Hy. He was one of the very best I knew in the furniture business.

He was always an upstanding gentleman. He was honest and his word you could 'take to the bank.' But the Evan's family knows all this, and surely he will be sorely missed.

Dear Larry and Carrie,

I have great memories of Mr. and Mrs. Evans. It was always fun to visit their house when we were in school at Oregon. They were a wonderful couple and always welcomed us warmly and seemed interested in each one of us.
Love,
Merry

My sincerest condolences to all the Evans family.

Many people speak casually of close families. My perception is this is truely a close family and Hy was at the center of it.

I admired Hy's ability to laugh often and heartily. He was selfless in his sacrifice to support his children's education, all of which have achieved prominent careers.

As patriarch of the Evans family, his children's character and the manner in which they are living their lives, is Hy's legacy.

Warmest regards,
