Mauro Potestio Obituary

Potestio, Mauro F. 86 07/27/1924 02/05/2011 Mauro Fortunato Potestio was born in Firestone, Colo., to Italian immigrants Agostino and Mary (Ghiglietti) Potestio. The family moved to Portland in 1933 and settled into the South Portland neighborhood where Mauro attended Failing Grade School. After moving to the eastside prior to his sophomore year, Mauro graduated from Franklin High School, the class of 1942. Call to duty interrupted his freshman year at the University of Oregon and he proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Force in the China-India-Burma theatre of war from 1943 to 1946. Briefly stationed in Atlantic City, N.J., before his deployment overseas, Mauro met the love of his life, Ann Attomanchek on the boardwalk in nearby Asbury Park. It was a relationship that was to last the rest of their lives. Married in Ann's hometown, Elizabeth, N.J., Sept. 8, 1946, their life together began on the East Coast. Mauro truly loved Portland though, and the G.I. Bill provided him an opportunity to go to the University of Portland. He received a bachelor's degree in education in 1950 and went on to get his master's degree in 1954. His teaching career quickly transitioned into the role of principal at Orient Grade School, a position he held for 24 years. He was a charter member of the Confederation of School Administrators Association. Mauro's devotion to the University of Portland (and his desire to do something new) brought him back to the campus in the capacity of sports information director in 1980. He was already a well-known component of the athletic department, having been the basketball official scorekeeper and being recognized for his home attendance streak of then 31 consecutive years. They had no idea. Honored just last week by the Oregon Sports Awards as the first recipient of its Ultimate Fan Award, Mauro attended his final game, the 898th consecutive of his home game streak, Jan. 29, 2011. Since 1949, Mauro has seen two-thirds of all the men's games and he was proud to say, over 80% of their wins. Add to that the hundreds of women's games, soccer games (he became almost as obsessed about that program), baseball games and golf tournaments (he was the men's golf coach from 1988 to 2001), to say that Munz (as his family and old friends affectionately referred to him) was a fixture at UP sporting events, would be a gross understatement. He was an oft-honored man. Besides the recent Oregon Sports Award, Mauro was also the university's Alumnus of the Year (1973) and an Athletic Hall of Fame inductee (1997). He was selected the West Coast Conference Golf Coach of the Year (1994) and received a Merit Award at the Oregonian's Banquet of Champions (1997). He was the Potestio family Butts Award recipient in 1980, 1988 and 2007. Active in many civic groups, Mauro never forgot his roots. He was an active member of the Club Paesano, Amici d'Italia, Festa Italiana Association (where he traditionally opened the Opera Night festivities) and an ardent supporter of the Portland-Bologna Sister-City Association. He enjoyed going to events put on by the Newsboys Association, the old Pacific Coast League, and South Portland and Franklin reunions. He and Ann had been parishioners at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church since 1952. A man of inordinate enthusiasms, we cannot speak of his life without mentioning his ultimate fandom of Frank Sinatra. Mauro collected every Sinatra recording, was a member of Sinatra societies, saw him every chance he got and would often be heard in his basement during a break in his action, listening to Ol' Blue Eyes. An avid oil painter, Mauro often portrayed his heroes, Frank, of course among them. Mauro was preceded in death by his brother, Joe; sister, Fenice; and loving wife of almost 64 years, Ann. He is survived by his sons, Phillip (Sally Hudson) and Mike (Karina); daughter, Maura Potestio Barajas (Carlos); grandchildren, Dylan (Jennifer) and Emily Hall, Nicolo and Cosima Potestio and Luisa, Anna and Mickaella Potestio; and great-granddaughter, Eva Hall . He will be greatly missed by his nephews and niece Richard, Robert, Michele and Steve Potestio and their families. Recitation of the rosary will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Southeast 18th Avenue and Division Street. Contributions in Mauro's name may be made to the University of Portland Athletic Department or the Portland-Bologna Sister-City Association.

Mauro was always such a sharp dresser! I will always remember the discussion we had in 1971 regarding the 6 Orient graduates who were killed in Vietnam! He was sincerely moved that they perished at such an early age. Truly a gracious and caring soul! I graduated from Orient in 1963.

Just learned of Mauros passing! I graduated from Orient in 1963. One day I sneaked across the street to buy some bubble gum at Millers Store in Orient. Some how Mauro knew I was there. He returned me to school by the earlobe, I was petrified! Never sneaked to the store after that! He was a great man and fair to all!

I want to express my condolences to Phil and Sally and the Potestio family. Phil, although I never met your dad, I am sure his loss is painful. My thoughts and best wishes are with you and your family.

Mr. Potestio saw my potential and supported me through his kindness and provided opportunities of recognition for me. I graduated from Orient Grade School in 1967. He spotted me in the crowd at a Seattle Pacific / U of P game in Seattle. Just as he always had, he had a big smile for me and wanted to know all about my college career. Probably thirty years later, he sat by me at an event at the Piasono Club. He held my hand through dinner as we caught up on old times and new. I will always remember him and the smile that always warmed my heart. Thank you for caring about me, Mr. Potestio. Your smile is now lighting up the heavens.

My sympathies to the Potestio family. Mauro was such a kind man. I will remember his smile, his flair for dressing, and the way he treated the staff and students at Orient. As a new teacher there, he helped launch my teaching career. I am grateful for his guidance and his caring ways. He will be greatly missed.

My first memory of Mr. Potestio was as Santa Clause. I think I was in the foruth grade, two of my brothers were younger. He dressed up as the Jolly Fellow and walked down to the corner of the block to our house, as well as others in the neighborhood, and brought Christmas with him. I will always have this fond memory. I also was one of the lucky who got a peek at his Sinatra collection, which was huge at that time.
Phillip, Mike and Maura my prayers are with you.

I went to Orient Grade School from 1951-1957 and remember Mr. Potestio well. I had three brothers and three sisters who also attended Orient. Mr. Potestio was always a kind, caring person. We moved to Ohio in 1959 but I'll always remember fondly my time at Orient. My prayers are with you.

To Mauro's family--that's the only name we ever knew him by....met him & Ann at the infamous U of P women's soccer games.
He was always so friendly with his ready smile--except when we lost the game! <;) Then he'd grump...but still have that twinkle in his eyes. We will miss him now and more come soccer season. God comfort you in this time of sorrow for your family & friends.

Always smiling when we would meet. He would take the time to chat and wish me the best. He made you feel good and that you were somebody.

My heart was saddened when I heard that Mr. Potestio passed away. He was a wonderful and caring individual. When he hired me at West Orient Elementary School more than 30 years ago, I was always impressed as I watched him arrive at school wearing his infamous bow tie and ready smile everyday. He was a true professional and a GREAT friend. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you.

Mauro and Ann,
I know you're both sitting down over Ann's homemade gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce as we type. And Frank is singing. Thanks always for your friendship and pretty much being our second parents -- and friends -- in Portland.
And to Phillip, Mike, and Maura, thanks for sharing them with us and so many others!

Mr. Potestio was my principal at East Orient (class of 1970). His wing tips could be heard down the hallways and served as our ‘radar’.

I’ve said hi to him over the years when I caught him at a basketball game, found him at the driving range for an LPGA event or our paths crossed through mutual friends.

I’ve shared his fan status with friends over the past thirty years as his streak was something to behold and admire. Knowing he would be in the stands when you went to a Pilots game, some how completed the experience.

Thanks for the lasting memories, the lessons taught along the way and a zest for life.

Mauro left an indelible impression the very first moment I met him a few years ago. I will not be able to attend the funeral as I caught a viral infection while returning from Italy last Wednesday. In spirit and in prayer I will be close to the Potestio family to bid farewell to Mauro....
Arrivederci, Mauro!

Mr Potestio was the principle at Orient grade school when I graduated in 1968. It just so happens that my father passed away the same day Feb. 5th. Funny how life reconects us isn,t it.

Phillip, Mike and Maura-
I am not sure if you will remember me or not, but I babysat you the summer of 1962, I think. My name is Susan Wilcox Littlepage Karbo. I went to Orient Grade School and your Dad and I became very fast friends. It was the summer your folks had the bedrooms upstairs redone. I remember your basement with all of your Dads Sinatra collection. He would be down there and tell us he was "only resting his eyes, not sleeping". I cared for him very much and am very sorry to hear he has passed away. Your parents treated me just like one of the family that summer and I have never forgotten any of you. God Bless--

My hearts go out to Mr. Potestio's family. I want you to know how much he meant to me and many other Orient students. He was a very special, caring, dedicated, and loving man. I have so many beautiful memories of playing with him on the playground. He always had time for us. As a teacher myself now, I hope that I am leaving those kind of lasting memories with my students. God Bless you Mr. Potestio!

Mr. Potestio was such a wonderful man. He took the time to put his arm around you, throw a few balls with the boys and girls on the playground and stop you in the hallway just to say hi. Every once in awhile you would get called into his office. Not because you were in trouble but because he just wanted to visit. He was such a well loved man by all and will be missed dearly!
