Andrew Chandler Obituary

Chandler, Andrew Known as "Coach" to many people, Ernie Chandler lost his 4 year battle with brain cancer on March 20. Born in Orlando to Andrew and Eleanore Chandler on January 8, 1946, Ernie was proud to say he was a true Floridian. After serving in the United States Marine Corp, he attended St. Petersburg Junior College, received his bachelor's degree in 1970 from the University of Central Florida and followed that with a master's degree from Rollins College in 1975. Ernie taught social studies at Evans High School for 35 years and served as a coach for many sports, most notably in football, soccer, softball, golf, and bowling. He also served as the athletic director for many years before his retirement from Orange County Public Schools in 2006. Ernie also received a retirement from Disney after 25 years of part time work. His loyalty to UCF and Evans High School permeated everything he did. He loved seeing former students and was virtually unable to go anywhere without hearing, "Coach, How are you?" including as far away as Fairbanks, Alaska. In 2007, Ernie was elected to the Florida High School Coaches Hall of Fame for his outstanding coaching record in soccer at Evans High School. He coached two state championship teams in soccer and still holds the record for the longest high school soccer game. (23 overtimes, 4 hours and 45 minutes) He was the first defensive back coach for the University of Central Florida football team in their inaugural 1979 season and remained a faithful season ticket supporter, never missing a home football game. In 2014, he and his wife, Evelyn, traveled to Dublin, Ireland for the UCF/Penn State game as well as to the game in Hawaii. Ernie was an avid golfer achieving 5 "hole in ones" in his lifetime and played memorable courses all over the world including St Andrews in Scotland. Ernie is survived by his wife, Evelyn, as well as two children, Ernie, Jr, Orlando and Suzyn Chandler in Kingston, Tennessee and two grandchildren, Lindsey and Delaney, both of Orlando. He is also survived by two brothers, Dick Jones, Thomasville, Georgia and Glenn Chandler. Malmo, Nebraska and one sister, Jeannie Porter of Summerville, SC. Friends and family will be received at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, 428 E. Plant St., Winter Garden on Wednesday, March 25 from 5-8 PM. Services will be held at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, 1450 Citrus Oaks Ave, Ocoee, FL at 10 AM Thursday with cremation to follow. Donations may be made in his honor to TR Legends Fund in care of Debby Kornegay 394 Stone Bridge Road Birmingham AL 35210. Checks should be made out to Region 8.

Coach Ernie Chandler wasn't just a skilled coach with the athletes he led onto the field or the patient teacher with a sense of humor. He was an educator who sincerely cared if his students passed or failed. He was also that coach who would spend a few more minutes with a player at the end of a game to give them an encouraging pep talk or a much needed kick in the butt.

Most importantly, he was man who seemed to care about all of his students & players like they were family, and he expected each of them to treat each other the same on & off of the field. Never failing to remind us to have each other's back--no matter what!!

Sharing positive thoughts, memories, and prayers with his immediate family whom he deeply cared about, and always spoke of so fondly. God bless.

As a member of those early soccer teams ('73-'75), you taught us all how to play soccer because most of us had never played before high school. Our teams immediately became winners mainly because you worked us very hard and taught us teamwork. You certainly left a legacy in your many years at Evans. I'm sure my dad is happy to greet you in Heaven - he always spoke fondly of your visits to his office at Evans.

very saddened by the news, coach was a great person and a great teacher. I remember one time during first period class, We heard this noise coming from the room joining us. coach went and looked into the room and saw that the whole entire class had fallen asleep during a movie, and the movie reel had run out and the film was flapping against the projector. Coach grabed our entire class had us go into the class that was a sleep, and on the count of 3 scream real loud and wake up the teacher and the entire class. What a great person lots of fun. he was one of the very few if any, teachers and classes I looked forward to going to. He will truly be missed. RIP.

I was saddened to hear of Coach Chandler's passing. I was his student assistant in 1982 and drove him crazy typing his worksheets/tests for him with tons of typos. March 24, 2015

There are SO many fond memories of time spent with Uncle Ernie. Family visits to Orlando were always an adventure-you never knew WHAT he would say or do next (trying to get on the Florida turnpike for free?) Steve met him for the first time when Ernie made the trip to Nebraska to attend our wedding in 1991 (he and my Dad-brother Glenn-were partners in crime and disappeared on a road trip to Memorial Stadium right BEFORE the ceremony..) We were excited to host him in Lincoln in 1997 on the occasion of the CFU/Nebraska game (CFU listed first just for Ernie:) Later visits to Orlando were also special, whether we were benefitting from Ernie's generosity visiting Disney or hanging out and enjoying his many stories-especially the ones about the trouble he and Dad got into growing up-although the perpetrator and the innocent changed between Dad's version and Ernie's! In spring 2013 we spent the evening together during a trip to Florida, enjoying his and Evelyn's hospitality. Uncle Ernie was doing well that night and we feel blessed to have been able to visit with him. Andrew Ernest Chandler was truly one of a kind, and he will live on in our family memories-may these memories I have shared be a comfort in this time of loss.

My thoughts and Prayers go out to this family. Coach was and will always be a mentor to all that ever crossed his path. Such compassion in everything he did in life. Giving always to lend a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, or a near just to listen.....you taught endurance, integrity, and determination. To always stay focused....and never give up!!! I will always remember the greatest days of Evans H.S. with you, your spirit, your laughter and the memories we will cherish forever. You attended all our H.S. Reunions and shared in memories that will carry on.
Never will we be able to express how Coach touched our lives.....but the impact and impression he left on us will be carried on through his work instilled in us, to drive with passion on the greatest accomplishments we can achieve. We won't let you down Coach, as we will PAY IT FORWARD with the gifts you left to us. Till we meet again, God's Blessings....Beverly Middleton, Ed.D., ME.H.S. Class of '74.
