Cecil Herring Obituary

Herring, Cecil a pioneering artist, writer and intellect died on January 12, 2015. Born March 8, 1931 in Miami, Florida to James and Naomi Darby, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Abbott Herring, Sr., (1986). She is survived by brother, James A. Darby of Flagler and four children, Cynthia H. Moe; Abbott M. Herring, Jr. (Joan); Michael S. Herring (Nell); and Claudia H. Whigham (Mark); ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Cecil was a Renaissance woman, who painted, sculpted, made jewelry and wearable art, and noted photographer and writer. She had degrees from UF and UCF and developed the digital arts program at Stetson University. She reported for the Today Newspaper in the 60's and 70's, covering the Apollo program, including the 1969 moon mission. She pioneered the use of sprayed PVC over steel to create unique sculptures called Spacescapes, (Spacecsapes.com), blending space technology with space art. Her works have been displayed throughout the U.S. and world, including New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Miami, China and Germany. Her art hangs in many Florida public buildings. She received a Kodak Innovator Award for large formal digital printing and countless awards in juried art shows throughout Florida. She's had one-woman shows throughout the U.S. and her jewelry is in the Ford Presidential Library. She tirelessly championed art causes for 65 years, mentoring and inspiring many young artists along the way. She "looked beyond the art horizon" and was a classy, intelligent and loving mother, never at a loss for words, who will have a lasting impact on the art world and on everyone she touched. A memorial service will be Thursday, January 22 at 2pm at Baldwin-Fairchild Oaklawn Chapel in Lake Mary. Flowers through Sanford Flower Shop.

My Dear dear friend. You will be so missed. I knew Cecil for a long time. We would go out to lunch on the spur of the moment. She would call and say "Shall we eat at..." and she would name a place. We talked of many things and of course art, always art. I loved being with her. Her love of life was voracious to say the least. One day my husband and I called at her house. She had just finished an oil painting of orchids. We both said at once "Oh! That's wonderful." That picture sits on the wall in our lounge. Beautiful! We just had to buy it.
I am an artist too, but Cecil was a real professional in many different ways. She is in my heart forever. It has taken me a long time to write this as I was so sad to loose her.
I know she is painting in heaven. They couldn't stop her.
Love you Cecil! Miss you dreadfully! Stella Bottoms.

What an inspirational woman forging new frontiers. The most amazing part is that she was quite humble about her accomplishments. She was always very matter of fact as though it was just something that needed to be done or she wanted to do, so she did it; exemplifying a true matriarch. It was a pleasure and an honor Cecil.

Cecil:
I had no idea you would go so fast. I'm glad I had a good visit with you the Saturday before you passed. It was just like you near the end to say I'm not done yet, and then you were back for a short time. I enjoyed your friendship and your company and over the past 3 1/2 years or so. You were a bright light to most of us, you will be missed dear friend.

The first time my husband met Cecil, we were both going to a DeBary Art League, Christmas party, out off Fort Florida Rd. We seen a car who seemed lost so we pulled over to see if we could help, it was Cecil! She followed us the rest of the way and we've been friends ever since! She was such a delightful person to be with and her demos were hilarious! She was a very good entertainer. RIP Cecil, paint the heavens to your hearts content. You'll only make it more beautiful if that's possible! We'll miss you!
